### 重刻禪林寶訓序

> Preface to the Re-engraved Zen Grove Instructions

此書盛行於江北，大著於吳中，而閩粵師僧十有八九莫之見聞。欲其禪林之振、法道之隆，詎可得乎？予昔行腳金粟，時目之如獲至寶，懷之有年，雖不能力行，抑亦不敢須臾忽也。然是集，始自明教老人，終於懶菴大師，於中三百篇，皆從諸老真心中流出。而其語言光明正大，直截簡切，真為萬世師法。然其會甚易，而行之誠難也。貴乎剪花取實，急救像季之流弊；摧邪扶正，恢復上古之真宗。澆漓之風既息，渾樸之道已全，而口耳傳流之弊、悖逆無根之說，曷繇而興？余每欲刊行、與眾共之，所愧囊空，弗克其事。今玄生禪人，鳩諸同志，剞劂流通，大有補於閩粵。倘遇血氣衲僧，磕著一言半句，將來蓋天蓋地，奚愁乎禪林之不振、法道之不隆？非惟子之願已足，亦不辜從上諸老口門放大寶光，炤耀天下禪林之本懷也。

> This book has spread widely north of the Yangtze and gained great recognition in the Wu region, yet eight or nine out of ten monks in Fujian and Guangdong have never seen or heard of it. How could we expect the Zen tradition to thrive and the Dharma path to prosper under such circumstances? When I was once traveling as a wandering monk in Jin Su, upon encountering this text, I regarded it as if I had found a precious treasure. I have kept it close to my heart for years, and although I have not been able to practice it fully, I have never dared to neglect it even for a moment. This collection begins with the writings of Elder Mingjiao and ends with Master Lan'an, containing three hundred pieces in total—all flowing forth from the true minds of these venerable teachers. Their words are illuminating, upright, direct, and concise—truly worthy of serving as guidance for ten thousand generations. Yet while it is easy to encounter this teaching, practicing it is genuinely difficult. What matters is trimming away the flowers to grasp the fruit, urgently remedying the corruptions of this declining age; overturning what is false and upholding what is right, restoring the true tradition of antiquity. Once the winds of superficiality subside and the path of simplicity is fully restored, how could the faults of mere lip-service transmission and groundless rebellious doctrines ever arise? I have long wished to publish this work and share it with all, but regret that my purse is empty and I cannot accomplish the task. Now the practitioner Xuansheng has gathered like-minded companions to carve the blocks and circulate this text—a great contribution to Fujian and Guangdong. Should any earnest monk chance upon even a phrase or half a sentence from this work, it will surely cover heaven and earth in the future. Why then worry about the Zen tradition not reviving or the Dharma path not prospering? This would not only fulfill my own wish but also honor the original intention of those venerable teachers of old, who released the great precious light from their mouths to illuminate the Zen communities under heaven.
