The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Zhaojue Zhangxue Zui is a compilation of discourses by the eminent Linji Chan master Tongzui of the Qing Dynasty, assembled by his disciples Chegang and others. Chan Master Tongzui, whose Dharma name was Zhangxue, was a distinguished disciple of the great late-Ming, early-Qing Linji master Chan Master Poshan Ming. His recorded sayings emerged during the turbulent period of the Ming-Qing transition, reflecting the transmission and development of Chan amidst societal upheaval. The contents encompass formal hall addresses, minor investigations, instructions to the assembly, encounters, dialogues, verses on old cases, Dharma discourses, letters, and more, comprehensively documenting Tongzui's Chan teachings, the sharp and direct methods he employed in guiding students, as well as his daily instructions on practice. This text serves as an important document for the study of early Qing Linji Chan, particularly the history of Chan in Sichuan. It holds an irreplaceable position within Buddhism for understanding the dissemination and evolution of the Linji style during the Qing Dynasty and remains a vital canonical source for Chan students investigating the essential teachings of the Linji school.
