> Preface to the Posthumous Manuscript of Fragrant Snow

> Long ago, when the great master Dayang Xuan was about to enter final cessation, he worried that no one would be able to follow in his footsteps. He composed a verse, along with his portrait, straw sandals, and robe, entrusting them to Fushan Fayuan. The verse read: "On Yangguang Mountain's summit grass, I rely on you to await the right price. When the extraordinary seedling flourishes, Deep and hidden, secure its spiritual root." Fayuan accepted these items. One night, he dreamed of a blue goose. At dawn, he met Touzi Qing, which fulfilled his dream. That the Dayang lineage continued another thread was all due to Fayuan's efforts. Alas! My brother Juzu and I both came from our late teacher's gate, yet each of us drifted to opposite ends of the earth. We had barely gathered together when suddenly we spoke of a long parting. He also entrusted to me his ruyi scepter, Dharma robe, and Dharma scroll, saying: "The fragrant cedar branch stands tall on its peak — following conditions, break off one twig. When the flowers bloom, the fragrant snow spreads far — why must it be an extraordinary seedling?" Indeed, "Fragrant Cedar" refers to the place where I dwell in lazy seclusion. When I read this verse, I counted among those who had wandered through his gate: myself, Mojing, Jinian, and Xianzi. These several disciples had all been close to him for the past three years — I never dared to slacken in my attention to his intent. Now, as we begin the winter retreat at Tianhua, with no harsh cold in midwinter, my younger brother Panming has compiled my leftover words into a collection called Record of Fragrant Snow, and together we plan to have it carved for printing. Just as it nears completion, they ask me for a preface. I say: "This is an unfinished task of mine." And so I happily take up the brush. Now, as the bell is about to sound, I announce to the assembly: "If you can speak the sentence of this very moment, you enter the number of Tianhua. If you can speak the sentence of the past, you belong to the stream of Fragrant Snow." Would I dare to regard Fragrant Snow as an "extraordinary seedling"? Or is it not an extraordinary seedling? Please, take a look — the Ruoye River has flowed backwards!
