> Preface to Layman Yan Wuchi's Mountain Dwelling Poems

> Poetry that contains Zen is only wondrous and transcendent, not necessarily tied to the essence of life. A monk's poetry, if not born of true and profound realization, often reeks of blandness, easily nauseating. The layman Wu Chi, due to illness, found leisure and daily contemplated the great matter of cause and condition. He fused literary sensibility with Zen thought, harmonizing with the mountain-dwelling verses of An Lan. Every line is vigorous and far-reaching, and many awaken the mind, such as: \*Listen closely to the flowing water, see thoughts cease—\* Who but one who has dwelled in the forest, listening to water for twenty or thirty years, could reach such depth? This is truly poetry as Zen.
