### 嚴印持居士日記卷跋

> Collected Notes of Lay Practitioner Yan Yinshi

記功論過，凡有心者俱可能之。至於無功之功、無過之過，俱不可能也。今居士日記大半從本地證得，所書師友法言，如人飲水，冷煖自信。自信、信人，何過之有哉？無過、無功，則孰曰中庸不可能也？我故曰居士能之。

> Recording merits and demerits is something anyone with a mind can do. But the merit that is no merit and the fault that is no fault—these are beyond anyone's reach. Now, most of what the lay practitioner writes in the diary comes from personal realization. The teachings of masters and friends recorded there are like drinking water—only the one who drinks knows whether it's cold or warm. To trust oneself and to trust others—how could that be a fault? When there is neither fault nor merit, who can say that the Middle Way is impossible to attain? That is why I say the lay practitioner has attained it.
