> Appeal for Donations of Land for the Great Buddha Hall

> Master Jingguang, a Chan practitioner and heir of the eminent Master Gude, continued the Pure Land tradition of Master Yunqi. He gathered companions and made a vow to commission statues of the Three Saints of the West, each sixteen feet tall. He spared no effort, enduring years of hardship, and now the work is complete—the statues shine with golden radiance, inspiring awe in all who see them. Yet they have yet to find a proper place of enshrinement. As he was discussing this with me, a guest said, "The Buddhas' spiritual power can surely find their own dwelling place—why trouble human effort?" I replied, "Human effort is precisely the Buddhas' spiritual power. A single thought of diligent resolve, encouraging people to open their tight fists and give what is hard to give, to accomplish what is hard to accomplish—these are all expressions of the compassionate guidance of Amitabha, manifestations of his very presence. Adorning my own transformed body is adorning my Dharma Body and Reward Body. Mind, Buddha, and sentient beings are not three different things—there is profound meaning in this. Heretics seek to destroy the external image and speak of a separate Reward Body. Followers of the Lesser Vehicle wish to abandon the Reward Body and Transformation Body and speak of a separate Dharma Body. Ordinary people wish to discard their own nature and speak of a separate Buddha-nature. Therefore, they do not believe in becoming a Buddha instantly. But for those who understand, ornamentation is self-ornamentation, giving is self-giving, accomplishment is self-accomplishment. The self-nature is saved by the self, the self-nature is realized by the self. One stick of incense, one flower, one tile, one straw hat—these are true offerings. A gift that can carry one to the other shore—is that not another name for becoming a Buddha on the spot?" The guest again said, "The Burning Lamp Buddha pointed to the place where Shakyamuni Buddha spread his hair over the mud and said, 'This piece of ground is suitable for building a monastery.' A wise person among the crowd took a marker from an elder and thrust it into the ground at that very spot, saying, 'The monastery is built.' At that moment, devas scattered flowers in praise. This is the shortcut of the Chan tradition—may we take these words to heart." I replied, "If you truly recognize this piece of ground, then the great earth is complete in it. If you truly recognize this one marker, then all the forests of the ten thousand trees are present. If you have not yet realized this, I ask Master Jingguang and his fellow Chan practitioners to point it out again from the very beginning."
