### 與陳華甫居士

> To Lay Practitioner Chen Huafu

福建佛事，喜無男女雜踏之擾，諸鄉縉紳俱認真護念，第衲所深意投老者，唯寶壽拳石耳。況與諸善信大有夙緣，令人夢寐以之，非勉強也。惟居士力護，以俟衲歸，歸期舊約，或半年、一年，決不至爽信者。今秋入闈，定當努力，念我山林人自不能安邦定國，又無德堪為陰翊，惟居士蠖伸一肩任之而已，使人人各發此念，而國界未有不安者，居士勿以一人力微為自怯也。我教謂一人發真歸元，十方虛空悉皆消殞。此雖理路，亦可事推，況居士已知會萬法為自己者，則一人自幹一人事，皆居士之本願，衲特為饒舌耳。忝知愛之私，故私望之。

> In Buddhist affairs in Fujian, I am glad there is no disturbance from crowds of men and women mingling together. All the gentry in various towns sincerely uphold and protect the Dharma. What I, as a monk, am deeply devoted to is only the small rocky hill of Baoshou. Moreover, I have a strong karmic connection with the many faithful donors, which makes me think of them even in my dreams—this is not something forced. I only ask that you, as a lay practitioner, strongly support this so that I may return. Our original agreement for my return is either half a year or a year, and I will certainly not break my promise. This autumn, I will enter the examination hall and will surely strive with effort. Consider that I, a person of the mountains and forests, am naturally unable to bring peace to the country or stability to the state, nor do I have the virtue to offer hidden support. Only you, as a lay practitioner, can stretch forth like a worm and take up this responsibility alone. If everyone could summon such a thought, the realm would never be unsettled. Do not shrink back thinking your single strength is too weak. Our teaching says that when one person awakens and returns to the origin, the ten directions of empty space all vanish. Though this is a matter of principle, it can also be inferred from practical affairs. Since you, as a lay practitioner, already understand that all phenomena are one's own self, then one person naturally handles one person's affairs—this is all your original vow. I am merely speaking redundantly. Out of the private affection born of knowing your worth, I therefore hold this private hope.
