### 首楞嚴經義海緫序　　　　　　　翦一

> Preface to the Ocean of Meanings of the Shurangama Sutra (Abridged One)

大佛頂首楞嚴經是諸佛之法印群生之心宗得此印者成正覺於十方迷此心者淪生死於塵劫是以釋迦如來獨佩此最上乘之法印而出現於世全提直指曲折開遮五十年間普印群生心地末後再垂洪範重起真慈故以阿難示遭魔嬈而啟發宣明遂有首楞嚴王無見頂法之稱審問心見揀辨圓通宣勝義中真勝義性是故於中一為無量現寶剎於毫端無量為一轉法輪於塵裏全彰頓悟併銷權乘發真歸元入如來藏以至天魔外道咸悟心宗無量法門一印印定所謂是名無上寶印者不虛語也已而般剌蜜諦持此印逾海越漠彌伽釋迦用此印譯梵成華相國房公秉筆授而潤其文主法璿師立科條而䟽其義自唐至宋閱五百年凡箋註解釋者故不可勝數皆此印之力也今有閩僧咸輝上人念佛祖之囑累慨法道之陵夷力於禪學之餘綜集多書圓成大部且以楞嚴義海為題求檀鏤板確志流通實有助於王化而補於宗教以開悟後來若非乘曩願力安能及此華嚴主山之神所得法門名出現無邊大義海者誠有在於是焉比因姑蘇定慧長老顯公特以此經遠來相云余三復其文究其深旨隨喜贊揚乃援筆樂與敘其大略書以授之偉乎義海沖深法流瀰漫事理俱備性相混融惟心法之大旨盡於茲矣後世讀是經者能頴脫名相旋復根塵脩然游戲寶明空海而直下取證楞嚴圓照三昧豈非悟自本心而得此法印者歟。

> The Śūraṅgama Sūtra is the seal of all Buddhas, the mind-essence of all sentient beings. Those who obtain this seal realize right enlightenment in the ten directions; those who are confounded by this mind drift through birth and death in the ocean of time. Thus, the Tathāgata Śākyamuni, bearing alone this most supreme vehicle seal, appeared in the world, raising it directly, expounding and pointing, adjusting and revealing. Over fifty years, he universally sealed the mind-ground of beings. At last, he set down a vast model, arousing true compassion once more. Thus, Ānanda, by staging an encounter with demonic disturbances, inspired the proclamation and clarification, giving rise to the name of the Śūraṅgama King, the peerless summit doctrine. Investigating mind and seeing, discerning perfect penetration, revealing the true supreme meaning within the supreme meaning—thus, within it, one becomes limitless, manifesting jeweled buddha-lands on the tip of a hair; the limitless becomes one, turning the wheel of Dharma in the midst of dust. Full manifestation of sudden enlightenment dissolves provisional vehicles; returning to the origin, one enters the Matrix of the Thus-Come One. Even celestial demons and heretics all awaken to the mind-essence; innumerable teachings are sealed by one seal. So it is said: “This is called the unsurpassed jewel seal”—these are no empty words. Afterward, Pramiti carried this seal across seas and deserts; Meghaśikhara used this seal to translate the Sanskrit into Chinese; Minister Fang, holding the brush, polished and refined the text; Master Changshui established its structure and commented on its meaning. From the Tang to the Song dynasties, over five hundred years, commentaries and explanations were countless—all empowered by this seal. Now, the Fujian monk Xianhui, mindful of the Buddha’s entrustment and grieved by the decline of the Dharma, labored in addition to his meditation practice, compiling many texts to form a great complete work. Titled “The Oceanic Meaning of the Śūraṅgama,” he sought donors for carving and printing, determined to circulate it. This truly aids the worldly order and supplements the spiritual teachings, awakening future generations. Without his previous vows and resolve, how could this be achieved? The Dharma-gate of the Lord of Huayan Mountain, named “Manifesting Boundless Great Ocean of Meaning,” truly resides herein. Recently, the elder Xing of Suzhou’s Dinghui Monastery specially brought this sūtra from afar to show me. After repeated perusal, I delve into its profound import, delighting in its praise. Taking up the brush, I gladly outline its essence and entrust it to him. How vast is this ocean of meaning! Deep and flowing, its Dharma-stream spreads far. Phenomena and principle are both complete; nature and characteristics merge in harmony. The great essence of the mind-only teaching is fully exhausted here. Future readers of this sūtra, who can transcend names and forms, return to the root and dust, roam freely in the precious bright empty sea, and directly realize the Śūraṅgama’s perfect radiant samādhi—would they not be those who awaken their own mind and obtain this Dharma-seal?

旹皇宋乾道八年十一月十五日左太中大夫叅知政事魯郡開國𬾃食邑一千一百戶食實封二百戶賜紫金魚袋曾懷謹序

> During the Song Dynasty, on the fifteenth day of the eleventh month in the eighth year of the Qiandao reign period, Zeng Huai, holding the titles of Left Grand Master of the Palace, Advisor to the Grand Councilor, and Duke of Lu Commandery, with a fief of 1,100 households (200 of which were actual taxable households), and awarded the purple-golden fish pouch, respectfully composed this preface.
