> Preface to the Commentary on Meaning

大佛頂密因了義首楞嚴經者乃竺乾之洪範法苑之寶典也昔能仁以出震五天獨尊三界假金輪而啟物現玉毫而應世觀四生之受苦也惠濟庶物愍群機之未悟也力垂善誘于是俯仰至理述宣微言闢大慈之門廓真如之海以為一切諸法唯依妄念而起一切眾生不出因緣而有乃知生死輪轉貪欲為本修證常樂禪慧為宗則斯經也可以辨識諸魔破滅七趣謂止及觀修圓教妙明之心發真歸元證上乘至極之說懿其般剌譯其義房相筆其文今江吳釋璿師學識兼高辯才無礙以是經典為時教於一代分妙理於十門功濟大千道傳不二瞪目合手以明妄毀相泯心以會宗信受則為世津梁開悟則入佛知見乃顯經以作䟽因䟽以明理故可以開前疑而決後滯披迷雲而覩慧日然後知色空無異同歸實際在佛靡殊不離方寸隨志在外護慙無內學因獲覽󲰥輙述序引歸依法寶幸精究於真詮讚楊佛乘願普沾於聖果者已。

> The Shurangama Sutra, a profound exposition of the Great Buddha's Hidden Cause and Ultimate Truth, stands as a supreme model from India and a precious treasure of the Dharma. Long ago, the Able One (Shakyamuni Buddha) arose in the Five Regions of India, uniquely honored in the Three Realms. He used the golden wheel of royal power to awaken beings and manifested the white curl of light to respond to their needs. Witnessing the suffering of beings in the four forms of birth, he compassionately saved all creatures. Grieved that the masses had not yet awakened, he tirelessly taught them with skillful means. Thus, he fully expounded the ultimate truth, proclaiming his subtle teachings, opening the gate of great compassion, and revealing the ocean of true suchness. He taught that all phenomena arise only from deluded thoughts, and that all beings exist only through causes and conditions. Thus, one can know that the cycle of birth and death is rooted in desire, and that the cultivation of eternal bliss is founded on meditative wisdom and insight. This sutra enables one to recognize all demons, destroy the seven paths of rebirth, and, through the practices of cessation and contemplation, cultivate the bright mind of the Perfect Teaching. It returns to the origin and realizes the supreme, ultimate dharma—the true teaching of the highest vehicle. Splendidly, Master Shramana Paramiti translated its meaning, and Minister Fang Rong wrote down its words. Now, in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, the learned and eloquent Master Shi (Xuan) of the Shi clan, combining great knowledge and unimpeded eloquence, has taken this sutra as a timely teaching for a generation. He divides its profound principles into ten approaches, and its merit extends throughout the great thousand worlds, transmitting the non-dual truth. By closing the eyes and joining the palms, one illuminates delusion; by rejecting forms and stilling the mind, one reunites with the essence. Faith and acceptance make it a raft for the world; awakening and realization enter the Buddha's knowledge and vision. Thus, by revealing this sutra and composing a commentary, through the commentary one clarifies the principles. This can resolve former doubts and settle later confusions, dispel the clouds of delusion, and reveal the sun of wisdom. Then one realizes that form and emptiness are not different, both returning to ultimate reality; there is no distinction in the Buddha, which does not depart from one's own mind. I have set my aspiration on external protection, but feel ashamed of my lack of inner learning. Because I have obtained this to read, I have written this preface as a guide. Returning to and relying on the Dharma treasure, may all diligently investigate the true meaning. May they praise and uphold the Buddha vehicle, and may all partake in the sacred fruit.

大宋天聖八年青龍庚午孟冬二十一日辛丑中散大夫守御史中丞充理檢使權判吏部流內銓上護軍瑯瑘郡開國𬾃食邑一千九百戶食實封二百戶賜紫金魚袋王隨撰

> In the winter of 1070 C.E., on the twenty-first day of the tenth lunar month, Wang Sui composed this writing. He held the titles of Central-Scattered Grand Master, Acting Imperial Secretary-in-Chief, Supervisor of Petitions and Investigations, Temporary Judge of the Civil Appointments Bureau, Superior Guardian Commander, founding noble of Langye Commandery with a stipend of 1,900 households (200 of which were actual), and was granted the Purple-Gold Fish Pouch.
