> The Tripitaka Master, Grand Master of Dharma, and Imperial Tutor Weijing humbly addresses this letter to Your Excellency the Imperial Secretary. Recently, I was honored to receive Your Excellency's newly composed preface to the Commentary on the Shurangama Sutra. This work by a great Confucian scholar praises the precious Buddhist vehicle, and though I am but a humble monk with shallow learning, I have had the privilege to glimpse its sacred phrases. My body and mind feel delighted, and my wisdom and insight grow brighter. I sincerely bow in reverence and accept this teaching with great joy. I now reflect: The Shurangama Sutra, which speaks of the Tathagata’s supreme path, the realization of ultimate truth through cultivation, and the myriad practices of Bodhisattvas, is the gateway to the Bodhisattva path and the seal of the Buddhas' minds. In the realm of phenomena, it reveals the boundless wonders of conditioned reality; in the realm of non-form, it points to the true source of the Dharma realm. It is neither existence nor non-existence, transcending all names and concepts. It manifests causes and shows results, delineating stages within the realm of spiritual transformation. The environment does not hinder the mind, and confusion does not obstruct wisdom. The nature of the seven great elements is so vast that nothing can limit it; the eight returning principles return to that which has no origin. Thus, one realizes the true suchness mind, stops the root of falsehood, and awakens the skillful expedient wisdom. Through expounding the secret words, all dharmas become perfectly integrated, and all Buddhas exist freely. Entering the two truths that are ultimately one, and awakening to the three emptinesses that are not truly empty—this sublime Dharma is indeed inconceivable. It is fortunate that a noble scholar has composed a commentary and preface, revealing the hidden teachings and clearly explaining the Buddha’s intent. I humbly believe that Your Excellency, the Imperial Secretary, has entered the Buddha’s knowledge and vision, understood the causes and conditions of the Dharma, learned the Buddha’s path of cultivation, and eliminated the illness of clinging to emptiness or existence. You proclaim the nature and characteristics of the Dharma, fully understanding their arising and ceasing. To protect the Dharma city, you have acted as a friend who does not wait to be asked. The profound preface you have written illuminates the teachings, serving as a lasting standard for future generations and an ever-burning torch for all beings. I, Weijing, who have long been guided by your kindness and have enjoyed studying your extraordinary writings, feel deeply indebted to your grace and cannot contain my joy. Words cannot express my gratitude. Respectfully, Weijing bows in reverence
