> Elder Master Yue was traveling to Huanglong when I, serving as Magistrate of Xi'an, was sent on official dispatch to another prefecture and missed the chance to meet him. Recently, he took charge of the prefectural granary. Through his disciple Yanqing, who resides in Jin, he sent me a letter and a text asking me to write a preface. The text records Master Yue’s daily discussions at Daoyi Hut with his disciples on the essential meaning of the \_Surangama Sutra\_, compiled by the practitioner Yingqian. I believe: True reality has no self-nature—it fully manifests through all things. Things have no self-essence—they appear only through true reality. Thus, the wondrous nature is unconditioned, its radiant function and inherent blessings are perfectly and intrinsically complete, beyond what words or traces can measure. But those who are deluded lose their way as they chase after objects, endlessly entangled in partial attachments and defilements. Even if they seek through learning and analytical understanding, they stray further from true reality. Now, learning and analysis arise from the hearing faculty. When the ear pursues sounds, subject and object are established, and the world of realms is generated. Therefore, this sutra reveals the secret path, teaching practitioners to trace the root back to its source and dissolve the defilements of thought. Then the true function of the six sense faculties is inherently perfect and accomplished—like a wooden puppet whose mechanism stops, causing all illusions to cease. And the "moon" which signifies reality vanishes even from its representation. Thus this collected discourse takes "pointing at the moon" as its title, and that says it all. If one who hears its meaning can transcend and realize it directly, shining together with all the sages, his secret realization does not come from external things—only then can we know that Master Yue never spoke at all. \_Dated the fifteenth day of the second month, the sixth year of the Xining era (1073 CE).\_ \_Written by Li Zhi, Appointed Officer of the Directorate of the Palace Library, Supervisor of Rice Granaries and Transport Service at Hongzhou.
