Heart Sutra (古瓶山牧道者究心錄)

自題

Self Inscription

Just this very face and mouth—utterly without evasion. Above, nothing to look up to or aspire after; below, no self to cling to or envy. They call me a monk, but I'm not quite a monk; they call me a layperson, but I'm not quite a layperson. Sometimes I rest alone on the highest peak; sometimes I mingle with people at the busy crossroads. Sometimes I play around the Golden Horse Gate; sometimes I trample through the Den of the Green Lion. In the deepest depths, even Buddhas and sages cannot spy me out; in the most hidden places, even demons and outsiders cannot fathom me. Before a question is asked, I cut it off; before a foot is lifted, I shout you down. I raise a sharp sword, keen and chilling—all for the sake of getting the grit out of your eyes. My style may resemble that of Shànhuì or Gān Zhì, yet my actions are more like Budai or Pǔhuà. I transmit the mind-seal beyond transmission; I uphold the fundamental teaching beyond upholding. Whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, the Way is fulfilled in all of it. When the waves settle, the moon appears; the wind rouses the tiger, and the clouds call forth the dragon.

(Hah!)
