### 序

> Preface

> Mount Song is a distinguished monastery in Kunming. Master Wild Bamboo, the wise monk Hui, was born in Changshou, Chongqing. From birth, he possessed an extraordinary nature and uncommon intelligence. Even as a child, his heart turned toward the monastery; he never attended the village school. Once he dedicated his mind to the Buddhist scriptures, he pursued them with diligent and arduous effort. He began by guarding the pearl and ended by abandoning the raft, thoroughly penetrating the Four Noble Truths and mastering the Six Classics. His words were subtle and rare, his brushwork like pearls and jade. Was he not one who gathered the finest essence from the rivers and mountains, endowed with genuine learning from divine sages? In his early years, he traveled through Yongchang Prefecture, where gentry and scholars looked up to him with reverence. Later, he raised his monk's staff at Mount Song, widely opening the path and guiding others. From this, we can see that within the Zen school, there is also a capacity for worldly governance! Previously, Mount Song was a famous scenic spot in the provincial capital, but over the years it had fallen into ruin. Earlier great masters, such as Tiantong Wu, Fushi Xian, and Zhuanjing Bi, belonged to the same lineage as the Master. Although the lamp of the Dharma was passed down, its power had not yet spread widely. When the Master arrived, he inspired such faith that the local officials came one after another to protect the Dharma. In less than five years, the monastery was completely transformed: soaring eaves gleamed with ornamentation, secluded halls were serene and pure, sweet dew was carried on the breeze, and golden clouds shone in the sunlight. The transformed city was opened, and all who entered it felt as if they had already crossed to the other shore. In the winter of 1668, I came to Yunnan on official transfer. In the spring of 1672, Zhang Yu, a fellow townsman of the Master, showed me the \*Later Record of Mount Song\*. As I read through it, it was as if I met the Master's intention. The Master often said, "This matter is inherently possessed by everyone; what is there to speak of?" Yet, could the \*Later Record\* be the Master's heart? He also said, "It is only because people bury their family treasure and vainly seek elsewhere that all sorts of metaphors and countless skillful means are used to help them realize their own mind." Then, how could the \*Later Record\* be unnecessary? I reflect privately: from Mazu to the Linji and Caodong schools, although the branches divided, the mind-seal is one. Thus, the Master's keen attention to this great matter means that sitting is Zen, and not sitting is also Zen; speaking and discussing is Zen, and not speaking or discussing is also Zen. Where is it not applicable? Although I have not met the Master, through Zhang Yu I obtained the \*Later Record\*, and through the \*Later Record\* I came to know the Master. Hearing of his reputation, I feel admiration and affection—need it be limited to meeting face-to-face and sharing a cup of wine? Therefore, I relate these matters to preface the later collection, hoping that the legacy of Mount Song will not be unworthy and that its compassionate shade may cover the great thousand worlds.
