> The Bhikṣu (monk) upholding the Bodhisattva Precepts, Zhixu, with one-pointed mind takes refuge in the Triple Jewel of the Dharma Realm. Humbly, on behalf of my late mother, the Upāsikā (laywoman) Jin Dalian, who passed away on the first day of the sixth month, now marking the third anniversary of her passing, I reverently burn seven sticks of incense from my arm as an offering to the Ten Directions' Triple Jewel: to Śākyamuni Buddha; to the great Bodhisattvas Mañjuśrī, Samantabhadra, and others; to Amitābha Buddha; to the great Bodhisattvas Avalokiteśvara, Mahāsthāmaprāpta, and others; to the Great Being Kṣitigarbha and to all the great Bodhisattvas of the ten directions; and to the pure and true virtuous friends present here, offering to all equally. I humbly received the grace of these virtuous friends, who on behalf of my mother recited various sūtras and dhāraṇīs<note place="inline">A group including Bhikṣus, Śrāmaṇeras, and other disciples of the Buddha, totaling eleven people, performed two sessions of repentance rituals, upheld sixteen sūtras, recited dhāraṇī sections 23,100 times, recited the names of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas 430,000 times. I personally upheld twelve sūtras and paid homage to the Three Thousand Buddhas of the Past, Present, and Future. The text does not record the details.</note>. May my mother's sinful causes and painful effects be utterly purified without remainder; may her seeds of wisdom and foundations of merit be fully complete and undiminished. May she awaken to the Dharma Realm's treasury-body and enter the ocean of Samantabhadra's practices. Furthermore, I, Zhixu, on behalf of my parents, and even all my relatives throughout kalpas (eons), and also on behalf of the present virtuous friends and all their relatives throughout kalpas, and broadly extending to all sentient beings of the Dharma Realm, all take refuge, repent, and make this great vow: For all sentient beings of the Dharma Realm, from beginningless time until now, may all sins of killing be eliminated. From now on, may they never again commit them. If fixed karma should result in suffering on mountains of knives or forests of swords, I, Zhixu, universally take it upon myself to receive it, enabling them to abide in great compassion. May all sins of stealing be eliminated, never to be committed again. If fixed karma should result in suffering through interrogation, coercion, or repayment, I, Zhixu, universally take it upon myself to receive it, enabling them to accomplish great generosity. May all sins of sexual misconduct be eliminated, never to be committed again. If fixed karma should result in suffering on iron beds or copper pillars, I, Zhixu, universally take it upon myself to receive it, enabling them to perfect pure conduct. May all sins of false speech be eliminated, never to be committed again. If fixed karma should result in suffering through tongues being ripped out or plowing by iron, I, Zhixu, universally take it upon myself to receive it, enabling them to realize the true Dharma. May all sins of intoxicant consumption be eliminated, never to be committed again. If fixed karma should result in suffering in rivers of ashes or boiling filth, I, Zhixu, universally take it upon myself to receive it, enabling them to attain great wisdom. May all sins of greed be eliminated, never to be committed again. If fixed karma should result in suffering in accumulations of cold and solid ice, I, Zhixu, universally take it upon myself to receive it, enabling them to eternally obtain purity. May all sins of hatred be eliminated, never to be committed again. If fixed karma should result in suffering through raging fire, I, Zhixu, universally take it upon myself to receive it, enabling them to give rise to great loving-kindness. May all sins of delusion be eliminated, never to be committed again. If fixed karma should result in suffering through blindness, deafness, or stupidity, I, Zhixu, universally take it upon myself to receive it, enabling them to fulfill Bodhi (Enlightenment). May all sins as numerous as dust and sand be eliminated, never to be committed again. If fixed karma should result in sufferings as numerous as dust and sand, I, Zhixu, universally take it upon myself to receive it, enabling them to ultimately attain Nirvāṇa. Through this merit, I humbly vow that all beings in the hells and similar realms may receive peace and happiness; that all hungry ghosts and similar beings may obtain satiation; that all animals and similar beings may receive liberation; that all asuras and similar beings may realize loving-kindness and patience; that all humans and similar beings may awaken to non-arising; that all gods and similar beings may exhaust all defilements; that all Śrāvakas and similar beings may give rise to the great vow; that all Pratyekabuddhas and similar beings may give rise to great compassion; that all Bodhisattvas and similar beings may fulfill Bodhi; that all Tathāgatas and similar beings may increase Dharma-joy. Furthermore, I vow for the four present Bhikṣus: may their lifespans increase, may their great compassion increase, may their profound wisdom be opened, and may their eye of wisdom be illuminated. For the four disciples of the Buddha: may they exhaust all habitual tendencies and swiftly perfect pure conduct. For the three Śrāmaṇeras: may their precept roots be eternally pure, and may they abandon all hatred and restlessness. Furthermore, I, Zhixu, vow that life after life, in every place, I may constantly serve and make offerings to all virtuous friends; that when these virtuous friends attain Buddhahood, I may be among their retinue of supporters; and that until the end of future time, I may never grow weary of this. I look up to and rely upon the Triple Jewel of the Dharma Realm, with your great compassion to shelter and protect, and your great compassion to rescue and deliver. May my vows swiftly be fulfilled, and may I universally share with all sentient beings in perfecting the seed of wisdom.
