### 己巳除夕白三寶文

> Self-Reflection on New Year's Eve 1929

菩薩戒比丘智旭，第三閱律藏畢，敬然臂香三炷，供本師釋迦牟尼、三劫三千諸佛，一切毗柰邪為首，及一切尊法，彌勒菩薩、優波離尊者，及西天東土宏律大師。又三炷，代同學某等，供養三寶，伏念諸佛滅後，以戒為師，唯有如說修行，名為正法住世。丁茲末運，競騖虛名，別解脫經，罕知端緒，秉羯磨法，罔識範模。文字法師，狂妄禪客，同為師子身蟲；形服沙門，羺羊持律，並致魔軍侵侮。爰發勝心，誓勤守護。仰願諸佛菩薩，應世聖賢，以本願大悲，救拔折攝。令我等永杜因循苟且之心，速奏挾持匡濟之力，再補第一義天，重浴尸羅法日。曜三塗而息苦，覆六道以常安。淨治三業，契會寂光，圓證五身，遍遊塵剎。

> The Bodhisattva-monk Zhi Xu, having completed his third reading of the Vinaya collection, reverently burned three incense sticks on his arm as an offering to his root teacher, Shakyamuni Buddha, to the three-thousand Buddhas of the three ages, to all Vinaya-centered supreme Dharma, to Maitreya Bodhisattva, to the Venerable Upali, and to the great Vinaya masters of India and China. He burned another three sticks on behalf of his fellow practitioners, as an offering to the Three Jewels. He reflected: Since the Buddhas have entered nirvana, the precepts are our teacher. Only by practicing as taught can we say the true Dharma abides in the world. Now, in this degenerate age, people scramble for empty reputation. The texts on individual liberation are hardly known from beginning to end; the procedures for formal acts are unfamiliar, lacking any model. “Scriptural” Dharma teachers and arrogant Chan practitioners are both worms feeding on the lion’s body. Monastics in robes who uphold the precepts like stubborn sheep invite the invasion of demon armies. Thus, he made a supreme resolve, vowing to diligently protect and uphold. He earnestly prayed that all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and the enlightened sages of the world, through their fundamental compassion, would rescue, teach, and guide. May they help us forever abandon complacent and negligent minds, quickly gain the strength to support and rescue the Dharma, restore the supreme truth, and once again illuminate the sun of ethical discipline. May this light shine upon the three lower realms, ending their suffering, and cover the six realms with lasting peace. May it purify our three actions, bring us into accord with tranquil light, perfectly realize the five bodies, and roam freely through countless Buddha-lands.
