> Rite of the Great Compassion Repentance at the Altar

> Zhixu and all beings, lost in our own delusion, remain perpetually in darkness, our innate awareness obscured. Our eyes are blocked from true clarity; our ears fail to perceive subtle truths. Not knowing the path to liberation, we wastefully used our senses of hearing. But even after seeking the Way, we lose the sharpness of our faculties—upon hearing the Dharma, we recall it only to forget; upon reading scriptures, we lose the thread, remembering the latter but forgetting the former. Thus the supreme nectar of truth never touches our consciousness, and the perfect, luminous jewel cannot illuminate our minds. How can those who struggle to see and practice successfully benefit themselves? How can those whose eloquence fails at phrasing and chapters hope to benefit others? Reflecting on this, I recognize my faults, bow my head, and beg for mercy. With deep faith in the Bodhisattva’s compassionate heart, I take refuge in the power of Remembrance and Retention. I offer three incense sticks upon my head to the Three Jewels of Great Compassion. May the light of wisdom pour down upon the crown of my head; may the water of learning and memory wash away the defilements of my heart. Grant that I quickly abandon dullness and ignorance, and soon attain clarity and insight. May I hear from afar the Buddhas turning the Wheel of the Wonderful Dharma, never forgetting it; may I constantly read the profound teachings of the Three Vehicles, remembering them at a single glance without fail. Equally with all beings, may we open the Buddha’s wisdom, realize the interpenetration of essence and practice, and suddenly awaken to eternal perfection.
