> Great Compassion Practice Dharma Hall Vow Text<note place="inline">Third day of the fifth month, Year of Yiyou</note>

> I bow to those who embody true great compassion, those who have fully realized the two kinds of enlightenment. Since beginningless time, I have fallen into delusion, Endlessly cycling through birth and death without pause. I have lost the natural bliss of my true nature, enduring suffering in vain. Now I wish to rescue others, but lack the power myself. I pray that the great awesome presence of the shared essence Will not abandon its fundamental vow but extend compassionate aid.

> I, disciple Zhi Xu, reflect that throughout countless eons, my words have not matched my deeds, and my heart has disagreed with my mouth. Though fortunate enough to have now entered the monastic path, I still cannot break free from old habits. Examining my life, I find six major offenses, and as for minor faults, they are beyond counting. Knowing clearly the path to the highest realization, I have not personally reached the true place of benefit of the Buddhas and Patriarchs. Understanding the perfect and sudden teachings, I have not attained the five grades to purify the six sense faculties. Recognizing the codes of discipline, both great and small, I have not purified my mind from conditioned transgressions and inherent faults. Aware that killing is the cause of wars and conflicts, yet the tendency to kill has not been completely abandoned. Aware that stealing is the cause of famine and disaster, yet the mind of theft has not been entirely severed. Aware that lust is the cause of epidemics and disease, yet the fires of desire still burn fiercely. Thus, my individual karma contributes to collective results, and my present actions evoke shared consequences. Witnessing the arrival of the three calamities, I grieve for beings caught in the four forms of birth—trapped in the cycle, uselessly harboring a vast wish to rescue others while instead being dragged down together in drowning. Examining myself in regret, what use are tears of blood? Now, fortunate to encounter the Jetavana Monastic Center and the practice of the Great Compassion Dharani Ritual, I resolve to join the assembly in purification, seeking to cleanse the defilements of myself and others. On this, the anniversary of my mother's birth, I reverently burn six sticks of incense on my head as an offering to the Buddhas, Dharma, and Sangha of the ten directions; to Amitabha Buddha, Lord of the Pure Land; to the secret essence of the Great Compassion Dharani; and to the Thousand-Handed, Thousand-Eyed Great Being Avalokiteshvara. I make six vows: First, may weapons and conflicts cease forever; Second, may the five grains be abundant; Third, may countless beings have proper faith in the Three Jewels; Fourth, may the ancient Lingfeng Monastery be restored; Fifth and sixth, may Zhi Xu's many lifetimes of evil habits be swiftly eradicated, the grease of afflictions dissolve, merit and virtue become complete, and may there never be any adverse or favorable unexpected obstacles, so that the two vows to read the Canon and to write may be fulfilled early. Furthermore, I burn ten sticks of incense on my arm as an offering to the Three Jewels of the ten directions, making ten kinds of vows: First, may the retreat leader's obstacles be purified; Second, may my fellow practitioners become worthy vessels; Third, may the incense and lamp attendants cultivate both principle and practice; Fourth, may the fellow practitioners in the outer hall uphold both precepts and study with urgency; Fifth, may all permanent residents and workers, who contribute effort and support in creating blessings, not fall into conditioned states; Sixth, may all protecting officials and donating benefactors deeply awaken to liberation; Seventh, may all who see, hear, or rejoice, whether monastic or lay, never waste their merits even in the faintest shadow or smallest particle of dust, but eternally become seeds of enlightenment, quickly attaining perfect and eternal truth; Eighth, may the monastics dwelling at Lingfeng, along with myself, soon obtain the pure, auspicious signs, perfectly accomplishing the two adornments of merit and wisdom, deeply contemplating suffering and impermanence, and earnestly seeking the essential path; Ninth, may the sufferings of the three lower realms cease, may beings in the eight difficult states be liberated, and may all creatures, from the wriggling to the flying, equally share in the supreme benefit; Tenth, may the merit from all this be dedicated to the Western Pure Land, universally with all sentient beings, to be reborn together in that land of purity.
