> Divination Practice Vow Text

> I take refuge in the Kind One, whose gentle power is peerless— Who lifts suffering and gives joy, the true path of liberation. With the power of meditation, you remove disasters of three kalpas, O true savior of the world, who bends down in compassion to rescue us.

> Disciple Zhi Xu deeply laments the calamity of this defiled age, from which escape is difficult, as the clash of weapons erupts everywhere. Though this is said to be the result of shared deluded perceptions, in truth it is not incurred without cause. Past karma cannot be undone, but future deeds can be guided rightly. Thus, together with my fellow practitioners \[ten\], we each donate pure funds to prepare offerings. We shall practice mindful discipline for three days and engage in seven days of proper cultivation, forming a pure meditation circle according to the Dharma, reverently performing the practice of divination and repentance. Throughout the six periods of the day, we will walk the path and refine the mind with the five forms of repentance. We cry out to the great compassion that sees all beings as one, earnestly beseeching that unconditioned liberation be granted. We reflect that the karmic obstructions of sentient beings, though extremely heavy and deep, are never abandoned or rejected by the vast kindness of the Three Jewels. If but one thought arises to repent and reform, forgiveness and renewal will surely follow. Moreover, Shakyamuni, our original teacher, is foremost in courageous resolve. And Bodhisattva Kshitigarbha’s vows are ever steadfast—just as a father’s love is especially strong when his child is weak and helpless, a mother’s compassion deepens when her child is unfilial. So too, pitying our foolishness, as children crawling toward a well, grant us the use of your hands, body, and robes. Let the light of your compassion shine forth, turning swords and weapons into auspicious clouds and radiant sun; let the rain of Dharma fall, transforming evil sprouts into seeds of the Way and spiritual growth. We pray for favorable winds and timely rains, a peaceful nation and secure people, the flourishing of true teachings, and the utter disappearance of evil and heretical forces. Next, we pray for the monk Zhi Xu to be free from bodily illness and mental entanglements, achieving a balanced union of meditative concentration and wisdom, and the complete purification of precepts and practices. Though our Dharma community has only three years, may the protection and guidance granted to the chief practitioner be as consistent as if it were a single day. May each of us truly face birth and death, awaken the resolve for enlightenment, overcome habitual tendencies, and fully cultivate the Dharma gate, perfecting the threefold training and fully adorning the two accumulations, continuing the Buddha’s wisdom-life and universally benefiting humans and celestial beings. We also pray for those who join with heartfelt devotion at the outer altar—monastics and laypeople alike—to awaken to the one reality, realize the three causes, fully cultivate the two contemplations, and perfectly attain the threefold patience. Moreover, we pray protective patrons and all allies, extending to all sentient beings throughout the Dharma realm, whether seeing, hearing, or neither, equally plant wholesome roots and uniformly receive supreme benefit. Finally, we pray for those who have recently suffered the calamity of war in regions north and south of the Yangtze, and even within the entire land of China—may all karmic debts be cleared, every resentment and enmity resolved; may they escape the intense suffering of the lower realms and be reborn upon lotus petals, ascending to liberation. Reverently we invoke the Three Jewels of the Dharma realm and the Holy Teacher Kshitigarbha, to truly know and witness our sincerity, and to truly embrace and protect us.
