> Vow to Establish a Pure Community During Serious Illness<note place="inline">Thirteenth Day of the Twelfth Month</note>

> On the thirteenth day of the twelfth month in the year Jiawu (1594), I, Zhi Xu, a disciple who has taken the Bodhisattva precepts, devote myself wholly to Amitabha Buddha in the Land of Ultimate Bliss, to Guan Yin (Avalokiteshvara), to Mahasthamaprapta, to the ocean-like assembly of pure beings, and to all the Three Jewels throughout the ten directions and three times. With deep remorse, I recall that my original intent was to resolve the great matter of birth and death. I left home at twenty-four, with not a trace of a wish to act as a teacher for others. But driven by illusions and circumstances, I wrongly became a teacher, and for over twenty years, though I performed some small acts of virtue in spreading the Dharma, my reputation burdened me. My practice of contemplation grew negligent, and I could not overcome afflictions to reach the fifth stage of attainment. Now, plagued by illness, my mind remains clear, but my strength fails me, and I cry out in distress, uncertain of what to do. Thanks only to the Buddha’s compassion, my frail life has not yet ended. If I do not urgently cultivate the Pure Land practice, how can I forever escape the cycle of suffering? With sincere resolve, I respectfully gather at the Lingfeng Sutra Hall, inviting like-minded Dharma companions<note place="inline">ten people</note> and lay protectors and novice monks<note place="inline">five people</note>, to unite with one mind and form a society for three years. Each day, we will practice recitation and prostrations during three periods, focusing on the sacred name, and during two periods of quiet sitting, we will delve into the great canon, cultivating both doctrine and meditation, and earnestly upholding both precepts and study. I vow that together with all sentient beings in the Dharma realm, we will surely be reborn together in the Land of Ultimate Bliss. From now on, I, Zhi Xu, vow never to ascend the teaching seat to expound the Dharma, unless a companion brings a text to request clarification, in which case I shall not dare to decline answering. For delivering written explanations and oral teachings, I entrust this to Zhao Nan, Ling Sheng, and Xing Dan, who can do so lightly and appropriately. I vow never to sit on a level with the Buddha’s image, except when sitting slightly to one side or facing it. I vow never to ascend the ordination platform to confer precepts; for the teaching of ordination and Vinaya, I assign Zhao Nan and Deng Ci to conduct this. I vow never to accept invitations to meals from lay families, except when in monastery quiet quarters. I humbly beseech the Three Jewels to bear witness and protect me. Should my remaining conditions not yet end, may I quickly attain peace; when my time inevitably runs out, may I proceed directly to the Pure Land. While alive, may I combine recitation with writing; when dead, may I neither fall nor regress. Moreover, I vow that my Dharma companions, whether I live or die, will steadfastly maintain their commitment to practice, finishing what they have started. And I vow that the lay protectors and novice monks, whether I live or die, will sincerely manage their responsibilities, without laxity or error. With this supreme and excellent cause of purity, we dedicate it to the unsurpassed ultimate fruit, universally sharing it with all beings, so that they too may return to the secret treasury.
