> Answering Four Questions from Yinsheng <note place="inline">Original questions attached</note>

> <note place="inline">Q: Before receiving the precepts, what practices help focus the mind? If someone breaks one of the ten precepts, are they allowed to confess and repent? After confessing, can they immediately receive the full monastic precepts? What method of confession grants true attainment of the precepts?</note>

> Answer: To receive the precepts, one must have a sincere mind, a pure heart, and a genuine aspiration for the supreme Dharma. Repentance requires a sense of shame, a decisive resolve, and a turning away from past wrongdoing. This itself is the method of gathering the mind; this itself is the cause for receiving the precepts. If any of the ten precepts are broken, one should vow never to commit them again. The monastic code allows you to progress to full ordination, but you should approach it with reverence, not haste.

> <note place="inline">Question: In the Buddha's entire teaching, may beginners read all the scriptures? May Chan practitioners study the teachings? If one waits until enlightenment before studying, it may be hard to maintain practice in this lifetime; but if one skims through and then starts to practice Chan, one may become entangled in intellectual understanding.</note>

> Answer: In studying scriptures, quality matters more than quantity. By delving deeply into the subtle meaning of one text—penetrating its very core and marrow—you will naturally illuminate all other scriptures, like splitting bamboo once you break the first joint. To reach the marrow, you must ensure that while reading, you are simultaneously contemplating your own mind. Since it is called "mind contemplation," its function is akin to meditative inquiry. Originally, it is not about chasing words or sentences—so what obstruction could there be? Doctrinal teachings fuel the spirit like oil feeds a flame; the key lies in thoroughly understanding their essence, not in skimming their surface. If you fail to grasp them deeply but claim that "intellectual understanding entangles you," how is that different from a defeated soldier blaming his knowledge of too many martial arts?

> <note place="inline">Question: Before Master Huangbo, there were no "koans" (contemplative questions). I wonder what methods were used to attain enlightenment? Now, what should I focus on and where should I begin my practice? What should guide me so that I am not overwhelmed by external circumstances? When should I find a teacher, and where will I reach the final goal? Please explain these matters in detail.</note>

> Answer: Directly realize your original nature—how could there be any fixed teachings? The method of studying a koan is but a later expedient, a way to halt the mind's grasping. All the patriarchs of the past concerned themselves solely with the fundamental truth. Learners today must start from that same fundamental truth. At all times and in all places, work solely on this essential matter. When you cease to perceive any external circumstances, how could anything overpower you? A good spiritual friend should constantly guide you in examining and refining body and mind, until you reach perfect enlightenment, which is the ultimate goal. This requires you to summon great courage, expand your mind, awaken great wisdom, nurture great compassion, abandon all views of attachment, and cultivate all skillful means. Only then will you not fall into the states of mere worldly paths, the lesser vehicles, or provisional teachings.

> <note place="inline">Question: When we talk about "investigating while reciting the Buddha's name," does this count as using a koan? Since I worry that in this lifetime I may not achieve enlightenment and it's hard to guarantee the next life, I use this method to secure rebirth in the Pure Land. But then I'm also afraid that this might create a convenient way for Chan practitioners to back down from full commitment. How should we reconcile these two approaches? Furthermore, what about someone who spends their whole life practicing Chan, and then on their deathbed makes a vow to be reborn in the Pure Land — how does this compare?</note>

> Answer: Sentient beings are confused and deluded; the more you explain, the more they doubt. I will now thoroughly reveal the truth, so that future seekers with sincere aspirations will not weep at the crossroads of indecision. Since you have already committed to a single path—entering deeply through one gate—why add layers of complexity by pursuing additional meditation or investigation? Just observe the patriarchs of the Pure Land tradition, and you will see that the Pure Land practice does not require Chan (Zen) meditation. However, if, for the sake of the great matter of birth and death, you harbor unresolved doubts and cannot let them go, yet still feel compelled to investigate Chan, then you should earnestly direct your practice toward rebirth in the Western Pure Land. Look at the great masters like Yongming Yanshou; from them, you will see that Chan surely needs Pure Land. The essential task at hand is clear and distinguishable—why bother with forced harmonization? If you have faith, then simply have faith; if you still have doubts, then pursue Chan investigation separately.
