> Answering Huang Zhigu's Three Questions<note place="inline">Original Questions Included</note>

> <note place="inline">Q: If a Buddha cannot eliminate fixed karma, how could the Earth Treasury Bodhisattva have the true words that eliminate fixed karma? And since the fundamental nature of sin and blessing is empty, what does "fixed" even mean?</note>

> Answer: Karma and its retribution are both manifestations of the mind itself. When the mind is empty, everything is empty; when the mind is illusory, everything is illusory; when the mind is centered, everything is centered. Ordinary people fail to understand that the agent of action, the object of action, the one who experiences, and what is experienced are essentially the three virtues of the secret treasury. Instead, with an earnest but misguided mind, they commit serious evil deeds, inevitably inviting severe suffering—this is called fixed karma. Once their mind is set in this way, it cannot be reversed, and even the Great Awakened One cannot instantly eliminate it. Therefore, out of great compassion, skillful means were devised, instructing the great Bodhisattva Kṣitigarbha to teach a dhāraṇī and encourage its practice—this is precisely transforming their fixed mind, gradually causing it to dissolve. Hence, the Bodhisattva’s power is entirely the Buddha’s power. The Buddha does not dwell on it, nor does the Bodhisattva; ultimately, it lies solely in each person’s single thought of faith and acceptance of the dhāraṇī. This truly embodies the principle that original blessings and faults are both empty—this is not to deny cause and effect. Blessings, faults, and cause and effect are inherently empty in essence, yet also illusory and centered. Delusion means that whether they are eliminated or not, one fails to grasp the origin; awakening means that both elimination and non-elimination do not obstruct emptiness. The ancients said: “What is original emptiness? Karmic obstacles are. What are karmic obstacles? Original emptiness is.” Understanding these two statements allows one to escape the trap of fox-like sophistry.

> Further question: It is still questionable — if the Buddha ultimately cannot extinguish \[suffering\], why doesn't the Buddha personally explain this?

> Answer: To explain this, we must understand three principles. First, all Buddhas teach according to four kinds of reason: some hear the Buddha speak and feel joy, develop goodness, eliminate evil, and awaken to truth. In such cases, the Buddha teaches directly, as with the \*Shurangama\* and \*Superior Victory\* mantras, which can eradicate fixed karma. Others hear a Bodhisattva speak and feel joy, develop goodness, eliminate evil, and awaken to truth. In those cases, a Bodhisattva must teach, as with this mantra and the Great Compassion mantra. Second, karma is not destroyed by itself, nor by another, nor by both together, nor without cause. Yet sometimes it is said to be destroyed solely by oneself—meaning the mind is empty, so karma is empty. Sometimes it is said to be destroyed solely by another—meaning through the power of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Sometimes it is said to be destroyed by both—meaning internal and external causes working together. Sometimes it is said to be destroyed without cause—meaning it is neither self nor other. All these teachings depend on the four kinds of reason; otherwise, they would lead to four types of misunderstanding. Third, not being able to eliminate karma refers to the Buddhas as manifested in the Three Pitakas; being able to eliminate karma refers to the enlightened beings of the Perfect Teaching. As the \*Avatamsaka Sutra\* says, “At the moment of first awakening, one has already surpassed even the Sage Muni.” This is another example. Understanding these three principles, one can penetrate all teachings without obstruction.

> <note place="inline">Q: When all conditions arise, if I calm my mind and settle in stillness, I experience great joy, but the effort of maintaining focus is very difficult. If I practice methods like breath counting or visualization, I worry about creating further mental activity. How can I suddenly enter a state where not a single thought arises?</note>

> Answer: All states of experience have never been born to begin with, nor do they ever truly cease. Confusion about this fundamental truth gives rise to the appearances of birth, abiding, and cessation; false views construct a web of endless conditions, creating false suffering. Likewise, setting the mind at rest in states of meditative stillness creates false happiness. Both suffering and happiness are intoxicated visions. Conditions gathering and dispersing are like the room spinning. Only when the intoxication clears can one realize the room never moved. Moreover, one must understand that the room never moved before the confused intoxication can clear. Methods like breath counting and insight contemplation each suit a different person’s nature. For those who wish to suddenly awaken that states of experience have no birth, nothing surpasses the fourfold reasoning for investigating essence. Observe this present thought: Does it arise by itself? Does it arise from something else? Does it arise from both? Or does it arise without a cause? If a thought arises by itself, why depend on external conditions? If it arises from something else, what does it have to do with oneself? If it arises from both, one part should be aware and the other part unaware. Even arising with a cause is impossible—how much more so without a cause? Examine carefully; seek the arising mark of a thought; in truth, it cannot be found. Since a thought has no arising, how can any state of experience exist? Both having no arising, there is no further cessation. In every moment, illumine and break through layer upon layer. Do not reject any phenomena, do not cling to any phenomena, do not tire of any phenomena, and do not grasp any phenomena. Intention is already non-intention; arising and ceasing are already non-arising and non-ceasing. One gate surpasses all—the wondrous and solemn path.
