> Answer: All the scriptures and treatises, whether exoteric or esoteric, directly point to the mind—seeing one’s true nature and becoming a Buddha. Apart from this mind, there is nothing else to explain. It is like saying the Six Classics are merely footnotes to my mind. Regarding exoteric and esoteric teachings: some attain the four benefits through exoteric teachings, others through esoteric teachings. The Buddha’s wisdom discerns beings’ capacities and adapts the teaching accordingly, just as a skilled physician prescribes medicine that precisely matches the illness.

> <note place="inline">A: When you awaken vows that arise from your true nature, this is called "giving rise to Bodhicitta"—the resolve to attain enlightenment above and to guide all beings below, never abandoning either. The "generation of Bodhicitta" as described in the sutras you recite—does it share the same meaning as the Confucian teachings and worldly moral instructions? Or is it different?</note>

> Response: The ancient Confucian masters were all manifestations of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, appearing as teachers and guides to lead the confused. The worldly teachings they established are none other than the Dharma. Later Confucians, bound by narrow views, could not extend and elaborate, thus creating a barrier between traditions. If we truly consider it, the sages first attained that which my mind shares in common—is this not the principle of the threefold non-difference? To delight in the way of Yao and Shun as if pushing others into a ditch is surely the aspiration of seeking above and transforming below. But when it comes to the nature of dogs, oxen, and humans being the same, Gaozi dared not accept it. Mencius also spoke of the slight distinction between humans and beasts—is this not proof that though habits differ, nature remains close?

> Answer: Generally speaking, when one recites mantras, each has its own purpose. The five divisions are distinct, and the three categories also differ. The book \*Yuantong\* mixes various elements together and is not a true seal of the Diamond Vehicle. The spiritual responses that come from relying on mantras arise from a person's sincere faith and diligent practice. If one follows these methods properly, how could the spiritual responses be limited only to worldly achievements like gaining merit or having children? Yet nowadays many people recite mantras, but few obtain responses. This is not only because their faith is not deep and their practice not strong, but also because the method they use is not correct. However, the methods of setting up an altar according to the sutras and upholding the Eight Precepts are only designed for those who have accumulated long-term skillful means and seek results within a fixed period. This does not mean that daily mantra recitation must always be done in such a way.
