> New Year's Eve Tea Talk (Year of the Rabbit)

> In tea talks across various places, people mostly speak of lofty matters. I, the old and朽旭, am not like that. Instead, I share with friends the practical benefits of everyday life. The Buddha established that monks should practice the Six Points of Harmony, which is why the Sangha is called a harmonious assembly. These are: sharing the same dwelling in body, living without conflict in speech, rejoicing together in mind, observing the same precepts, holding the same views, and sharing resources equally. Following these six harmonies makes one a true jewel of the Sangha—and the essence of it all is just a single compassionate mind. The Buddha told the monks: "You should practice compassion through your bodily actions, through your speech, and through your mind. Know that compassion closes the doors to all bad destinies and universally gives rise to countless good qualities. A compassionate person—even those who are angry feel joyful upon seeing them; those who are afraid feel safe; those who are worried feel relieved; those who are suffering feel happy. Even birds and beasts, upon seeing such a person, do not develop thoughts of harm or fear." Consider that even Māra can manifest a Buddha's splendid appearance and brilliant light, yet those who see him feel uneasy and restless, because he lacks a compassionate heart. The Buddha also manifests the form of a Wrathful Deity, fierce and mighty, yet those who see him have their faults purified and good qualities arise, because he possesses the power of compassion. In my entire life, I have never shaved the head of a single person, nor have I ever changed anyone's name. For all who dwell together, from all directions and both near and far, we practice the Dharma as our bond, with no favoritism or bias. I only hope that each friend cultivates the Samādhi of compassion. Do not follow worldly customs and defilements, nor force yourself to be different for the sake of being different. Diligently observe the Buddha's precepts, thoroughly uproot false emotions. Every bit of habitual tendency you remove is a bit of practice; every bit of bias you dissolve is a bit of learning. I have shallow virtue and thin conditions, and I vow not to seek a bustling gate or worldly propagation. You must each take the Great Matter to heart, remember to repay deep kindness, encourage one another, and strive to reverse the declining trends. Only then will we not waste this time of dwelling together. When the final day—the thirtieth of the twelfth lunar month—arrives, you will have genuine benefit and will not end up like a crab dropped into boiling water. Take care.
