> Tzu Chi Says

> The Buddha's Way, vast and compassionate, takes filial piety as its foundation. Filial piety encompasses all practices, with loving-kindness as its essence. Through the power of the meditative state of loving-kindness, poison can turn into sweet nectar, weapons can transform into celestial flowers—truly it is the cure for an age of decay, the sacred mantra for dissolving karmic enmity. Alas! The four elements share the same essence; enlightenment is without distinction. What is "me" or "other"? Who is "enemy," who is "friend"? Because of deep confusion, we cling to notions of right and wrong; because of strong attachments, we falsely create feelings of love and hate. Love leads to endless rebirth, hate to ceaseless harm. When pleasant, hate turns to love; when unpleasant, love turns to hate. Thus love and hate revolve, enemies and friends interchange. Though actions are individual, the collective karma brings forth weapons and war. If we do not cultivate great loving-kindness, how can we rescue ourselves from this great calamity? If we truly set up seven realms of beings for contemplation, and offer the three kinds of happiness to harmonize our minds—even toward a former enemy, we can give them the highest happiness, causing our hearts to rejoice without resentment or envy—then if we walk toward a mountain of swords, these swords will surely break; if we step into a cauldron of boiling water, the fire will surely go out. Thus we know: the boundless fearlessness of the Universal Door is none other than the single thought of loving-kindness in our own present mind. If every person in Jambudvipa were to fully cultivate this meditative state of loving-kindness, and the Saha world did not transform into a Pure Land, then all Buddhas of the past, present, and future would be lying. Even if the whole world engages in killing, if one person cultivates this alone, that one person will surely attain peace and purity on their own. Only the wise can truly believe this.
