> Lotus Seed of Rebirth <note place="inline">Also known as "The Secret of Seeking Rebirth in the Pure Land"</note>

> In the winter of the year Guiwei, I was teaching the Lotus Sutra at Pude Temple. Layman Li Shilan, disregarding his age and social status, was the first to take refuge in the Three Jewels. At that time, he harbored the ordinary worldly wish for a child, so I gave him the Dharma name "Jingyu" (Pure Nurturing). Three years later, he had transformed his desire for a child into the aspiration to make a Buddha statue. Morning and night he devoted himself to it, single-mindedly seeking rebirth in the Pure Land. I said to him: "Worldly childbirth is a mess of blood and pus—how could that be called pure? Only being born from a lotus flower is truly pure nurturing. You should take the name 'Yunlian' (Pregnant Lotus)," and I further gave him a vital key to practice. The ancients said: "If love is not heavy, one is not born in the Saha world; if thought is not unified, one is not born in Ultimate Bliss." Since you no longer seek a child, your love has already become light. Since you also make Buddha images, your thought has already become unified. As for the vital key, nothing is more essential than these two phrases: "This mind makes the Buddha; this mind is the Buddha." Sandalwood is merely a worldly wood—burn it and it becomes ashes, carve it and it becomes an image. Is this not created according to the mind? Once the image is made, you bow to it morning and night. It is always before you, always in your mind. The Buddha is not apart from the mind—is this not exactly what is meant by "this mind is the Buddha"? If you realize that the carved Buddha image is truly made by the mind and is the mind, then you will know that the Buddha Amitabha in the Pure Land is also truly made by the mind and is the mind. If you know that Amitabha in the Pure Land is made by the mind and is the mind, then you will know that all Buddhas of the ten directions and three times are also truly made by the mind and are the mind. If you know that all Buddhas are made by the mind and are the mind, then you will know that all Pure Lands are also truly made by the mind and are the mind. With the pure cause of the mind-only, nurture the pure fruit of the mind-only. Without birth, yet born—born, yet without birth. If you hold this key and still fall into the city of doubt, that is impossible. If you awaken to this secret and still say the Pure Land Dharma door is not perfect and sudden, that is even more impossible.
