> Essay on Abstaining from Lust

> People know that the karma of killing living beings is most dreadful, but they do not realize that the karma of sexual misconduct is even more dreadful. People know that the retribution for killing is most severe, but they do not realize that the retribution for sexual misconduct is even more severe. For all forms of life arise from the root of desire, and all forms of wrongdoing rely on this life as their basis. Desire is the root of life, and life is the root of transgression. Thus, when even a single thought of lust arises, all the great sufferings of the three lower realms and the residual calamities in the human world spring forth together. The habit of lust is as difficult to break as a wildfire blazing across the plains. Mistaking the most foul place for something fragrant and beautiful, mistaking the most filthy place for something pure and clean, indulging in casual unions wherever possible—how is this different from a beast? Engaging in impure contact outside of proper relations goes beyond even the behavior of chickens and dogs. Anyone with even a trace of conscience should be utterly disgusted by this. How can it be that intelligent and learned people willingly submit to such shameless, mindless behavior? A single thought of lust is the cause of the iron bed and copper pillar of hell. A single thought of attachment is the cause of the freezing ice of accumulated cold. How much more so when one commits unlawful acts, overturns moral principles, and disturbs the natural order? Eons of dust-mote time would not suffice to exhaust one’s guilt; millions and billions of words could not fully describe one’s wickedness. One must generate profound shame and fear, and make great vows: rather than be burned by fire or cut by knives, may one never allow the thought of lust to touch the minds of all men and women. Rather than have one’s body shattered and bones crushed into dust, may one never engage in filthy union with any man or woman. If one forgets right mindfulness and again commits the previous offenses, one will inevitably encounter poisonous harm and unforeseen disaster, and in this very life will fall into hell. With such resolute determination, one should earnestly bind one’s own mind. Continually repent for past deeds, earnestly repent and reform, so that the path of purity can be cultivated. Furthermore, one should diligently contemplate the essential teachings of the scriptures and commentaries to steer away from negligence and forgetfulness. One should meticulously practice contemplative methods to uproot the poison. Otherwise, even if one possesses great wisdom and attains meditative absorption, one will inevitably fall into the path of demons and never find liberation. As for worldly cleverness and eloquence, such talents are not truly great vessels. Following karma, one will fall straight down, undergoing burning and boiling for hundreds of eons and thousands of lives. One may not even become a demon—how could one ever become a Buddha? One may lose even the human path—how could one ever achieve rebirth in the Pure Land? Please reflect carefully upon these matters in times of stillness, and strive to guard against them when faced with temptation. Otherwise, even all the Buddhas would have no place to guide you. What, then, could good spiritual friends do for you?
