> Origins of the Eight Precepts Ceremony

> Without comprehending the patriarchs' intent, one has no true insight for entering the path. Without expounding the teachings, there is no proper road for cultivation. Without upholding precepts and pure conduct, one's practice achieves no real merit. This flaw has plagued the final Dharma age for a long time. I have often said that those with genuine aspiration cannot discuss doctrinal teachings if they do not understand the patriarchs' intent, and cannot properly practice precepts and fasting if they do not master the teachings. This is what is meant by "cultivation through awakened principle and practice." As for the principle that precepts give rise to concentration, and concentration gives rise to wisdom—the entire teaching of the Tathāgata cannot enter the inner chamber without this gate. Devout followers of Zuili have created a six-day fasting assembly. On each of the six days, they practice one discipline: - On the 8th, they release living beings, first expanding the great compassion of shared essence. - On the 14th, they repent and bow, purifying the three obstacles of self and others. - On the 15th, they recite sutras, planting the perfect sudden teaching as a wholesome influence. - On the 23rd, they investigate meaning, opening the path of awakening in their own minds. - On the 29th, they sit in meditation, awakening to the original source of one mind. - On the 30th, they recite the Buddha’s name, purifying the four lands of the mind-only. They cycle through, beginning again, and never forget this commitment. Those who have not yet planted good roots should now be helped to plant them; those who have already planted good roots should now be helped to grow them. Guiding and transforming others step by step, gradually deepening their practice—matured in this, liberated through this, from beginning to end never departing from this method of the eight precepts and fasting—perhaps then this final age may be turned around.
