> Essentials of Consciousness-Only: Contemplating the Mind's Origin

> All dharmas are nothing but consciousness-this even a novice herder can say. Yet when it comes to deeply grasping its true meaning, even seasoned masters remain confused. Why? Simply because they interpret the text literally, focusing on doctrine without corresponding contemplation. However, the method of contemplating the mind is not something separate from the teachings. Look at the ten scrolls of the Treatise: where does it not clearly state that nothing exists outside the mind? The dharmas that are simply mind-these are the objects of contemplation. Understanding that dharmas are merely mind-isn't this itself the wisdom of contemplation? When wisdom arises, attachment to self and dharmas vanishes, revealing true nature. Thus, objects, teachings, principles, practices, and results are all called "consciousness-only." The five stages and five contemplations are unified throughout, rich without chaos, profound without confusion. Alas, ancient commentaries have been lost; modern teachers differ in interpretation. With textual meaning already distorted, what can contemplation rely on? The dull retreat like gazing at the ocean; the sharp recklessly force their way. The four-part analysis is not understood; the one-mind principle is set up in vain. The three natures are not explored; the ultimate meaning of the two truths finds no home. Fortunately, we still have the \*Questions and Answers for Beginners\*, preserving a rough outline; and the \*Great Commentary\* and \*Mirror of the Treasury\* provide references. Tracing back to the source, we find the \*Yogācārabhūmi\* and \*Prakaraṇāryavācā\* treatises-the Yellow River's headwaters. Thus, Master Shaojue's \*Phonetic Meanings\*, Master Yiyu's \*Collected Explanations\*, and Layman Yutai's \*Proof and Commentary\* all exhaust thought and delve deeply. Yet while the path of doctrine is clear, the path of contemplation remains hidden. Later, Master Xinyi composed a work harmonizing teachings, strongly advocating the five contemplations, surpassing all previous systems-though unpublished, only a taste is available. Now, with a few like-minded companions, I propose to open the door to perfect, inherent, and unobstructed nature through distinctions between transforming and transformed consciousness. Thus, I ramble on, taking up the brush. I dare not indulge in lengthy prose, but only aim to directly illuminate contemplation of the mind, recording as I teach, offering this for the wise to examine.
