> Preface to the Radiant Light of Changgan Pagoda

> There are in this world things truly real, yet if a skeptic doubts them, they become false. There are also things utterly false, yet if a true believer trusts them, they become real. Reality and illusion have no fixed nature—they are simply the immediate manifestations of one’s own mind. Consider how the four stages of enlightenment were attained by a novice monk through a playful toss, or how the emptiness of phenomena was realized when a silent wanderer retreated from a mendicant. Those who seek the Way place their faith in the true and profound above all else. In these final ages, sentient beings are ablaze with turbid intellect, their scheming minds constantly in motion. They neither trust themselves nor others. When speaking of another’s faults, their spirits soar and faces flush; when praising another’s virtues, they curl their lips and show their teeth. No wonder their thoughts remain cut off from compassion, and they grow ever more confused as they proceed. The Grand Retribution Pagoda, the most magnificent under heaven, is sheltered by celestial dragons and serves as the foundation for the wholesome roots of all beings. Upon its completion, it displayed wondrous signs, recorded in the imperial annals; according to circumstances, it emanates precious light, as told by the elders. This is by no means strange or bizarre—why should there be any doubt? Yet, regarding the single matter of Reverend Bihui, who sought light and received light, the crowd slanders him. Now, if the reverend saw the light, others saw it too. If it is said that the light manifested through the collective response of the assembly, then he should not have claimed it as his own. But do they not understand that the essential nature of all things, like the radiance of a mirror, reflects and enters into all, mutually merging? When the World-Honored One addressed the assembly, each person felt the Buddha was speaking to them alone. So what fault is there if the reverend felt the pagoda emitted light exclusively for him? Some even criticize the reverend’s life story. I say: to have witnessed the pagoda’s light is itself a sign of deep-rooted past virtue. If you wish to doubt the reverend, why not also doubt the pagoda itself? I, for one, trust the pagoda, and thus trust the reverend as well. The verse says:

> The Buddha’s light is ever-present, Like the moon in the open sky. When sentient beings’ minds are clear as water, That light appears wherever they are. Faith is a gem that clears the water, Dispelling turbid thoughts of wisdom. With deep and sincere repentance, We align with compassion’s endless call. How wonderful, Master Bihui! Whose heart perfectly understands the sacred relic. Lights and images stream like clouds, Lotus flowers fall like rain. This is called the Light of Truth, This is called the Eternal Still Light. If you don’t yet grasp the nature of illusion and reality, Why try in vain to count and measure? I know all phenomena: Neither false nor true. Just trust enough in this path, And walk together in the light.
