> Preface to the Pure Land Repentance Ritual

> No pure, no defiled—the undifferentiated true thusness. But the defiled is itself the pure—the muddled buddha-nature. Trust the sincere words of Shakyamuni, awaken to the vow-wheel of the Dharma-Treasure, and understand at last: whether precepts, doctrine, or Chan—all flow forth from the Pure Land path, and all return to it. At first, my aspiration was in the Zen tradition. I practiced with bitter effort and deep investigation for years. Though I dared not claim the arrogance of thinking I had arrived, I considered my foundational work so solid that Pure Land rebirth seemed unnecessary. But when I fell ill and lay close to death, the very methods that had supported me were utterly useless. Only then did I turn my heart wholly toward the West. Yet still, I clung to my original practice, hoping to fall into the category of "Chan and Pure Land both." It was only after meeting Tushan that I understood the sickness of Chan in the degenerate age. I abandoned Chan outright and devoted myself to Pure Land practice—even though I was ridiculed for "giving up food for fear of choking," I did not care. Now, after three more years of single-mindedly practicing the Pure Land path, I see that fervently discarding the defiled and embracing the pure is not essentially different from non-attachment or non-selection. Compared to the ancestral meaning of the West (Chan), could it be any more direct? How I grieve for the wild Chan of this final age—they chatter like birds, squeak like mice, not only denying the Pure Land but also slandering the true Chan tradition. The layman Jiyu, on the occasion of carving the six schools at the Furi Temple, took on the Pure Land section, beginning with the Repentance Liturgy. This book's ten sections on practice and five steps of remorse cultivate the mind, thoroughly penetrating the roots of principle and phenomena, extending the ultimate meaning of nature and cultivation. It is like blending a single incense pill or drinking a drop of ocean water—what fragrance is not present? What water is not touched? I write this preface accordingly.
