### 印禪人閱台藏序

> Preface to Yin Chanren's Reading of the Taisho Canon

> The path of doctrine and contemplation is difficult to discuss. Those who prize wisdom and eloquence are vast as the ocean, but their error lies in drifting with the current and forgetting the source, causing dull-witted beings to sigh in despair. Those who value cultivation and realization are as steadfast as an iron stake, but their shortcoming lies in guarding a tree stump and waiting for rabbits, inviting ridicule from those with shallow understanding. Only the wise one realized the Samadhi of the Lotus Sutra, attained the dhāraṇī of unobstructed insight, expounded the sublime principles for ninety days, plumbing the profound depths of the doctrinal net. With the Ten Vehicles of Contemplation, they perfected observation and perfected the essentials. Like lamps passing flame, patriarchs transmitted to patriarchs. Surpassing the schools of Xianshou and Ci'en in brilliance, they flourished alongside Huangmei and Shaolin in splendor. The mind-seal shines like sun and moon; its transmission spreads throughout China and beyond. Among the most extensive texts, there are three: the Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sutra, the Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra, and the Great Calming and Contemplation. The Profound Meaning and Words and Phrases prioritize doctrine with contemplation secondary; the Great Calming and Contemplation treats contemplation as primary and doctrine as secondary—thus forever avoiding the error of merely reciting texts, as one counts treasures or describes food without tasting, and rising above the calamity of dark realization without understanding. Master Jingxi expounded these works: his commentary on the Profound Meaning is the Shi Qian, on the Words and Phrases the Miaole, and on the Great Calming and Contemplation the Fuxing. These are truly the lifeblood of the Buddhas and patriarchs, the eyes of sentient beings. An ancient saying goes: "If the Tiantai doctrine exists, the Buddhadharma exists; if the Tiantai doctrine perishes, the Buddhadharma perishes." This is no deception. In the degenerate age, practitioners have heavy obstacles and dull faculties; their study is shallow and their will feeble. They act rashly and abruptly, merely polishing their mouths and ears. They only gloss over texts and passages, handling things carelessly to gain fame and profit. When discussing the profound origins of the Dharma and the lineage of sages, they dismissively say, "How long is a human life? Can one spend a whole lifetime on such pursuits?" They do not reflect that life passes like a glimpse of a horse through a crack, a phantom shadow—what does fame or profit provide? If one can connect with the true source, one should vow to pursue it through countless eons. Moreover, the Dharma is neither complex nor simple; confusion and awakening lie in the person. If one fails to understand a single sentence, one may toil over a thousand mountains; when conditions ripen through countless ages, one may attain perfect mastery in a single instant. Anyone with a touch of resolve must never abandon or waste this opportunity, losing the gateway of sweet dew!
