> Preface by Wenxiu Society

> The fellowship of shared cultivation must not be neglected, for if it is, the study of life and human nature will certainly decline. Confucians emphasize gathering through shared learning and supporting one another in virtue, while Buddhists call "good spiritual friends" a great cause for attaining the Way and the foundation of the pure holy life. In both worldly and transcendent paths, friendship is never an urgent matter to be set aside. When the times decline, gatherings focus on poetry, wine, and scenic outings, indulging the senses and opening the door to dissipation—this is true not only for Confucians. Alas! Those who shave their heads and dye their robes spend all day together in groups—what are they hoping to achieve? Even if they do not sink into attachment to flowers and wine, they merely pick through texts and phrases, polishing only their mouths and ears. When will they truly understand the mind and reach the source? Some, fearing choking, stop eating altogether, and so single-mindedly pursue sitting meditation as their only practice. Without having clarified the eye of the Way, and lacking mutual discussion and refinement, they are like driving a boat with a nail for an oar—wasting days in vain. At worst, they develop fixed views and arrogance, falling into pits and traps. This kind of dark, unverified "Zen sickness" is far worse than talking about food without eating. Without true wisdom and a thorough determination to transcend birth and death, who can break free from these two traps and pursue a final, thorough resolution? A practitioner of the One Vehicle, a seeker of stillness in the Dharma ocean, sees the prevalent corruptions and feels a deep concern for the future. He establishes a Dharma gathering, meeting for three days each season. They practice repentance and confession, and examine the sutras and treatises together. With both the eye and the feet moving forward, they quickly enter the state of cool clarity. He came to ask me for a name and a preface. I put my palms together in rejoicing and named it "Hearing and Cultivation." Hearing gives rise to true wisdom, like oil fueling a flame. Hearing the Dharma without practicing it is like a deaf person playing music. Now, they cultivate on their own for ninety days and hear together for three days. Since they do not neglect practice even during those three days, their ninety days of self-cultivation naturally include hearing. Arising from hearing, they engage in cultivation—thinking is so obvious it needs no mention. With the three wisdoms, they refine themselves; with the three wisdoms, they encourage each other. With the three wisdoms, they strengthen their resolve, humble their minds, stabilize their footing, and guard against corruptions. Thus the true Dharma will shine again—all through this single undertaking.
