> Afterword to the Verse of the Three Thousand Gates

> Grandmaster of the Northern Qi dynasty, having attained the Way of Nāgārjuna’s \*Middle Treatise\*, passed it on to Nanyue, and then to Zhizhe. Only then did the practice of contemplation and teaching become prominent, the principles of the provisional and the true become clear, and the understanding and cultivation both become sublime, truly transmitting the Buddha’s mind-seal and surpassing all other schools. In the Tang dynasty, Master Jingxi, and in the Song dynasty, Master Siming, were both hailed as revitalizing patriarchs. Thus, even the burning house became a lotus, and all tasted the nectar of the Dharma—Liang Su and Chen Guan being among them. From the Yuan and Ming dynasties onward, this path declined. Some had teachings but no contemplation, like a poor person counting others’ treasures; others had contemplation but no teachings, confusing the ordinary with the sacred. In the early Wanli era of the Ming, the elder Miaofeng arose and began to advocate this path, but amid the many voices of Chu, his teaching could not prevail. Layman Feng Kaizhi then earnestly requested a commentary on the verses of the “Gate of Existence,” considering them essential for scholars and gentlemen. The master’s explanation was fluent and lucid, and both monastics and laypeople were drawn to reform. Now, sixty years have passed, and the old woodblocks are no longer to be seen. I recognize that reopening this path truly depended on the two great beings, Miaofeng and Kaizhi. Therefore, I have collated and reprinted this text to repay the Dharma grace, and have appended the letter of Yingzhong to Shangming Zhi, which sheds mutual light on the matter. If readers come to know that the very moment of mind is precisely the inconceivable existence, the sublime provisional, the initial gateway of the perfect teaching, and the Dharma realm itself, complete with all three thousand dharmas, lacking nothing—how could this not be the direct pointing to the mind, the seeing of one’s nature to attain Buddhahood? How could this not be the inconceivable realm, perfectly including the nine realms, forming one great vehicle, causing neither regression nor arrogance? Ah! If one does not read this, how can one know the subtlety of the “Three Great and Five Lesser Treatises”? And if one has not thoroughly mastered those, how can one know the subtlety of these verses and their commentary?
