> Preface to Encouraging the Practice of the Great Buddha Crown Sutra

> The Three Causes are inherent in our nature, absolute and transcending all limitations, present everywhere and eternal. When we awaken to this nature and cultivate practice, this is called perfect penetration. Our current states of confusion, karma, and suffering are precisely the true substance of the teachings, practices, and principles. Yet those deeply lost in delusion, though using them daily, remain unaware. Therefore, we rely on ultimate reality to manifest written words, and rely on written words to support contemplation. Contemplation and written words are both ultimate reality. Ultimate reality and contemplation are both written words. Written words and ultimate reality are both contemplation. The essence itself is ultimate reality, the essence itself is written words, the essence itself is contemplation. Ultimate reality is eternal; written words and contemplation are also eternal. Ultimate reality is omnipresent; written words and contemplation are also omnipresent. Ultimate reality is awakened; written words and contemplation are also awakened. Ultimate reality is venerable; written words and contemplation are also venerable. Ultimate reality cannot be seen; written words and contemplation also cannot be seen. Ultimate reality cannot be absent; written words and contemplation also cannot be absent. Alas! Those who have already awakened to ultimate reality may not need written words. But those who have not yet realized ultimate reality—how could they neglect diligent contemplation? Those with profound contemplation know there are no written words outside ultimate reality. Those without refined contemplation—how could they understand the ultimate reality within written words? Yet even though they do not know the ultimate reality of written words, ultimate reality never fails to manifest right within written words. The \*Shurangama Sutra\*—Master Zhiyi bowed to it throughout his entire life, and Master Paramiti transmitted it by cutting open his arm. Is this not because ultimate reality and contemplation both rely on written words as their condition? Someone might say: "The sage has departed with what cannot be transmitted. What remains are merely dregs." This is the view of those who have not understood that ultimate reality, contemplation, and written words are mutually identical and mutually pervasive. Once upon a time, a mathematician taught his son arithmetic formulas, but the son recited them without being able to use them. Then another person studied the phrases from the son and could calculate as well as the father. Would you say the formulas had no skill? Then why could the son recite them yet not understand? Would you say the formulas had no skill? Then why could another person learn and calculate? Moreover, without the son reciting them, how could that person have learned? I certainly do not wish for people to be like that son. Yet being like the son is still better than not reciting at all. How much more so when the power of the Dharma is inconceivable, the power of the Buddha is inconceivable, and the power of inherent Awakening is inconceivable. An inconceivable influence, an inconceivable transformation—these are the true causes for attaining Buddhahood. How could they be compared to a mathematical formula?
