> Exhortation to Uphold the Brahma Net Mind-Ground Chapter

> All who have a mind can attain Buddhahood, and therefore are all embraced by the Buddha's precepts. Since they are embraced by the Buddha's precepts, how could they not recite these precepts? This precept text is called the "Chapter on the Ground of the Mind," because there is no Dharma apart from the mind, and no mind apart from the Dharma. Thus it is also said, "Those who do not accept the precepts are like wood or stone, without a mind, and are called heretics." Indeed, this is worth pondering! People today speak loftily about the mind and inherent nature, and recklessly claim that one need not accept precepts. But when it comes to those who are willing to accept them, they are often completely in the dark about what the mind and inherent nature truly are. As soon as one principle is obscured, two illnesses arise at once. The mind that chatters about emptiness is certainly not the true mind. And the precepts held by the dull-witted are also not the true precepts. However, concrete practice can support principle; even the goodness of precepts can still serve as a remote cause for enlightenment. Principle does not stand alone; empty talk simply provides a basis for false views. This is why, after the \*Nirvana Sutra\*, upholding the precepts was established as the core teaching. And when the \*Brahma Net Sutra\* first appeared, the Pratimoksha (rules of individual liberation) was concluded first. The "Ground of the Mind" chapter is especially a raft for the last age, a precious torch on the dark crossroads. Out of compassion for the novice Liao Yin Guo, who lacks both merit and wisdom, I encouraged him to recite this chapter daily. Having tasted a bit of the Dharma's joy, I thought to urge others to do the same. The sutra says: "Bodhisattvas should always transform all beings and bring forth the bodhi mind. If they do not bring forth the mind to teach and transform sentient beings, they commit a minor offense of defilement." So, apply yourselves! Strengthen your spirit, fortify your resolve, persist in your discipline, and remain steadfast in your practice. May all sentient beings throughout the great earth return to the Dharma-door of the Ground of the Mind. Do not consider three thousand worlds as the ultimate limit.
