> Preface to the Great Buddha's Crown Dharani

> Great Compassion Dharani, the supreme spiritual incantation, spread into China and became a daily practice—this demonstrates how the karmic conditions for Mahayana Dharma have flourished here. However, misunderstandings have accumulated over time. Some claim that the six syllables "Xi Da Duo Ban Da La" constitute the heart of the mantra; others assert this is simply the mantra's name, and that the heart is found in the passages beginning with "Duo Zhi Ta." These baseless assertions contradict the Buddha's true intention and are deeply regrettable. The sutra extensively praises the merit of the mantra's heart, and states that those who cannot yet recite it by heart should write it down to enshrine in the meditation hall or wear on their person. Nowhere does it mention extracting a few phrases as the mantra's heart. If it were merely a few lines, why would the text say that those with dull minds—unable to memorize it—should engage in writing, offering, and wearing it as their spiritual practice? The ten rolls of the sutra clearly reveal the Tathagata's Storehouse Mind; the five assemblies of the mantra secretly embody it. Though explicit and esoteric teachings differ, their nature—the mind's inherent principle—is one and the same. The entire mind becomes the mantra; the entire mantra transmits the mind. Thus, it is called the "Mind Mantra" or "Mantra Heart." Chan Master Xie Tian strongly encourages those of true faith and diligent practice to either recite the entire mantra or write it in full—for their own offering and wearing, as well as for benefiting others. The aim is to harness the mantra's power to illuminate one's own mind, thereby correcting the errors of the degenerate age and ascending to the stage of abhisheka initiation. When Ananda earnestly requested the teaching once more, the Tathagata radiated light and spoke again. Dharma protectors expressed their vows and asked for blessings. King of Vajra Storehouses followed beings through countless eons. The full merit of all this is contained herein.
