> Preface to Master Xinggu's Writings

> The saying goes: "If everyone despises someone, one must carefully examine that person." Even the most foolish person, if concerned about reputation and benefits, would not willingly invite universal hatred. If someone endures universal hatred without concern, then there must be an extraordinary inner resolve that deserves understanding. My friend, Master Xinggu Shou, traveled extensively, visiting nearly half the land. Wherever he stayed, about one in ten people loved and respected him, while nine out of ten disliked or doubted him. Though his interactions with others sometimes lacked tact, his heart was as firm as iron and stone—truly committed to leading both himself and others toward enlightenment. This dedication must never be forgotten. Now, looking at his surviving writings, he criticized others' faults without hiding their virtues, used his own strengths without concealing his weaknesses. He spoke directly from a sincere heart, without evasion or embellishment. Such bitter medicine, good for healing, was exactly what this degenerate age could not accept—yet wasn't it precisely what this age urgently needed to take? After Master Shou passed away, only Master Songzhou Fang cherished the kindness of his strict but caring guidance. Fang compiled their lifelong correspondence into a collection of dialogues. Just as he was about to have it printed, Fang also passed away. His senior disciple, Huan Yi Bengong, then took charge of carving and publishing the text. Alas! Master Shou's lifelong dedication was only truly appreciated by Master Fang, who understood and repaid his kindness. And Master Fang's half-lifetime of diligent effort was continued only by Bengong, who carried forward his master's will. Thus, Master Shou's legacy would be preserved through Master Fang, and Master Fang's teachings would be transmitted through Bengong. Those who practice filial piety will surely reap its rewards—how could this be doubted? I had the closest relationship with Master Shou, and we benefited each other the most. Now and forever, I shall never find such a friend again. So, with tears streaming, I write this preface.
