> Preface to Entering the Dharma Realm<note place="inline">For Cheng Jiqing</note>

> Now, the Dharma Realm is the realm of liberation that transcends conceptual thought. The Lotus Sutra says, "Worldly speech, occupations that sustain life—all accord with the true Dharma." All things that accord with the true Dharma are beyond conception. If a practitioner enters the Dharma Realm with a mind bound to concepts and thoughts, how can they ever penetrate its true nature? Yet, even without penetrating the Dharma Realm, they have never truly left it. Why? Because the thinking mind itself is fundamentally beyond thought. Once you realize that all thoughts inherently are the mind beyond thought, then all conceived realms are inherently the realm beyond conception. Only by understanding that the conceivable is itself the inconceivable can one awaken to Bodhi—a true, great Bodhi mind. Only with this awakened mind can one enter the Dharma Realm. Look at the Avatamsaka Sutra: When Sudhana calls upon spiritual guides, he always says, "I have already set my mind on enlightenment." And the guides always reveal to him the state of liberation they have realized. Need we even mention the virtue of Cloud Dwelling? Consider: The Brahmin’s mountain of knives and sea of fire, the elder’s blending of incense, the helmsman sailing his ship, the woman using desire to transcend attachment, the child’s mastery of the bodhisattva’s letters. Did any of them ever depart from the realm of thought to find a separate liberation? Could any of them impose thought upon the inconceivable state? The layman Cheng Jiqing, a man of ten great vows, has long set his mind on enlightenment. How did he enter the Dharma? He began by studying Chan at Mount Jing, then took up the doctrines of Consciousness-Only, then cultivated the visualization of the Buddha’s body. Now, as he harmoniously benefits all beings and protects the Dharma, he guides others simply by pointing out geomancy and interpreting the balance of yin and yang. But this geomancy and yin-yang principle—are they not clearly the product of causes, not without reason? As the Surangama Sutra says: When awareness becomes clear and emptiness appears dull, their interaction stirs movement—this is the origin of wind. When brightness gives rise to moisture, fire rises and steam ascends—this is the source of water. Thus, the magnificent ocean of worlds in the Avatamsaka Flower Bank is just one vast system of wind and water. Movement is yang, stillness is yin. Movement and stillness interact—things come into being, grow, and transform. When they overpower each other, worlds form, abide, decay, and vanish. All this, in essence, is nothing but the perceived forms of our own mind-consciousness. The entirety is illusory, yet all illusion is grounded in reality. Conditionally generated dharmas are simultaneously empty, provisional, and the Middle Way. Hence, the Buddha of Lapis Lazuli Light contemplates the nature of wind’s movement and unites with the Buddhas of the ten directions, transmitting one wonderful mind. The Moonlight Bodhisattva meditates on water, attains patience with the non-arising of dharmas, and perfects supreme enlightenment. This is because the nature of water is truly empty, and emptiness is truly water; the nature of wind is truly empty, and emptiness is truly wind. Though these appear according to karma and mental capacity, each different, they have never ceased being the original pure nature, perfect and pervading the entire Dharma Realm. Now, the essence of geomancy lies within the twenty-four mountains. If we view things from the Lotus Store World: The Land of Joy corresponds to East (Zhen), the Land of Peace to West (Dui), the Precious Appearance to South (Wu), the Perfection to North (Zi). One particular world of suffering entirely contains these twenty-four orientations. This four-continent system, within the Avatamsaka Flower Bank, is located in the East (Mao position). Among these four continents, the southern Jambudvīpa corresponds to South (Li). Each Jambudvīpa itself also contains the twenty-four mountains. China sits in the northeast of the southern continent, roughly between Zhen and Gen. The two capitals and the thirteen provinces themselves each manifest the twenty-four mountains. Furthermore, one province contains a prefecture, that prefecture a county, the county a household, the household a room, and within that room a single sitting mat—and all these, without exception, encompass the entire twenty-four mountains. Each brings forth all celestial and earthly signs of auspiciousness and calamity. Moreover, from the perspective of this one mat, look east and it becomes west; look south and it becomes north. From the perspective of other mats, each seen from the other, there is not a single tip of a hair that does not contain the complete twenty-four mountains in their entirety and function. This hair-tip’s twenty-four mountains are exactly the same as the Flower Bank’s twenty-four mountains—not two, not different, not separate, not interrupted. Thus we say: The Dharma Realm contained in a single mote of dust is not smaller, and the Dharma Realm as such is not larger. Is this conceivable? Or is it inconceivable? Unchanging yet responsive to conditions, the whole Dharma Realm is contained in a single hair-tip. Responsive yet unchanging, one hair-tip contains the entire Dharma Realm. Only now can we understand that the conceivable geomancy is originally inconceivable. Jiqing has personally realized this direct, present awareness. Without ever departing from the principles of yin-yang and geomancy, he fully expounds all Dharma doors. Those who do not understand see only geomancy. But who recognizes that with this great awakened mind, contemplating the inconceivable realm, he fulfills the bodhisattva path and enters the Way of Samantabhadra? One day, when the Buddha sits at the site of enlightenment and someone makes a southern pilgrimage, the layman of ten vows should tell them: "I only know this skillful method of wind and water geomancy. But as for the great bodhisattva-mahasattvas, whose wisdom is like an ocean, whose vows are like the sky, who fully realize the distinctions and natures within the Dharma Realm and perfectly know all non-dual dharmas—how can I possibly know or explain their virtue and conduct? You should go forth, visit teacher after teacher, until you see the One Who Will Be Reborn to Enlightenment." Then the practitioner Ouyi will extend his right hand and touch the crown of their head.
