> Preface to Guanquan's Spiritual Friend Guiding Ten Thousand People Through Lifelong Pure Land Recitation

> The essential secret to transcendence lies in the power of vows. A vow is where faith culminates and practice originates. Without faith, there can be no vow; can one who makes no vow truly be said to have faith? Without a vow, there is no practice; if a vow is sustained, is that not itself the continuation of practice? Therefore, after Dharmakara Bhikshu made his forty-eight vows, the four kinds of Pure Lands of Amitabha Buddha became manifest. From that time onward, vow after vow has continued without end, just like one lamp lighting another in an endless chain. The patriarchs of the Pure Land tradition serve as reliable proof. My Dharma friend Guanquan once pricked his blood to write the Lotus Sutra and diligently prostrated himself, reverently reciting the Great Compassion Mantra. After completing these practices, he chanted the Buddha's name ten thousand times each day. Now wishing to guide others, he believes that requiring exactly ten thousand recitations is too rigid and difficult to guarantee. Whether one chants one hundred, ten, or even just one recitation, as long as it is done consistently throughout life without interruption, then one will definitely achieve the supreme samadhi of horizontal transcendence. The teaching that a single recitation can lead to rebirth is no empty promise. I praise his insight. This very principle is the final proof for rebirth, the ladder on the path of buddhas and patriarchs. Let these words serve as an encouragement for those who take this path—may you see yourselves as already named on a lotus petal. There is no need to seek other perfect and sudden teachings; this single recitation has already transcended the stage of Buddhahood.
