> Preface to the Alert-Minded Lay Practitioner's Practice and Recommendation of the Sutra of the Past Vows of Earth Store Bodhisattva

> "The sage, if lost in thoughtlessness, becomes a fool; the fool, if he can master his thoughts, becomes a sage." This is the transmission of the subtle and precarious teaching. The same is true of the Buddha's Dharma: in a single moment of delusion, the eternal tranquil light becomes the Avici hell; in a single moment of awakening, the Avici hell becomes the eternal tranquil light. Therefore, the \*Earth Store Fundamental Vows Sutra\* shares the very same bloodline as the \*Avatamsaka Sutra\*. Look at the Avatamsaka realm: it is empty, yet conventionally existent, yet the Middle Way—inconceivable. The sufferings of hell are likewise empty, conventionally existent, yet the Middle Way—inconceivable. The Avatamsaka reveals the Pure Land inherent in one's own mind, guiding us to return; Earth Store reveals the wheel of suffering inherent in one's own mind, guiding us to avoid it. Returning and avoiding—their aims are fundamentally different. Yet returning is mind-only, and avoiding is mind-only; apart from the mind, there is absolutely no other reality. As the Confucians say, "The Way has only two: humanity and inhumanity." How precarious and subtle! The threshold between good and benefit separates Emperors Shun and Zhi; the choice to retain or discard divides humans from beasts. Those who read the \*Fundamental Vows Sutra\* thoroughly yet fail to awaken themselves and help others awaken, to escape hell and return to the Avatamsaka treasury—such people are utterly devoid of humanity. The lay practitioner Jingxin, moved by compassion, upheld this sutra for his entire life and encouraged others to do the same. I say that the very moment this intention arises, the bitter wheel of hell ceases instantly. Joyfully I write this preface, speaking on behalf of all beings in the Dharma realm to extend this encouragement.
