> When the Buddha’s Dharma entered China, both greater and lesser teachings were presented, and expedient means stood alongside ultimate truth. Among all methods, the one that benefits beings of all capacities, gathers the broadest audience, and offers the most direct and complete path is none other than the Pure Land school. Master Kumārajīva first translated the \*Amitābha Sūtra\*, and soon after, Master Huiyuan established the White Lotus Society at Donglin Temple. At that time, eighteen eminent masters—all outstanding figures—gathered there in vibrant community. Even literary giants like Tao Yuanming and Xie Lingyun were humbled in their presence; the rest need not be said. Five \*li\* from Donglin lies Incense Burner Peak. Some among those eminent masters, drawn by its quiet beauty, built thatched huts there and called it a sacred place. During the Tang dynasty, Bai Juyi (the “Fragrant Mountain Hermit”) built a cottage beside the peak, naming that spot the “Humble Dwelling of the Eminent Ones” and later establishing the Monastery of Relic Love. In the time of Emperor Shizong, the Chan master Endless Light took up residence there. After he passed away, his body remains intact to this day, as if still in deep meditation. Master Endless Light received the Dharma from Master Tianqi Rui, and was in fact the ninth-generation descendant of Chan master Gaofeng. During the Wanli era, Dharma Master Xue Lang En spread his teaching far and wide, and many vied for intellectual insight. At that time, Dharma master Shimen Ji, who resided here, carried on the tradition solely through diligent practice, and was deeply respected by Master Hanshan and greatly admired by Master Zhuanyu. He too passed away peacefully before the peak. At first, only the eminent master Bai Juyi had made his home in this sacred place. Now, with the addition of masters Endless Light and Shimen Ji, the site has three such figures. Master Shimen Ji’s Dharma grandson, Master Fuchen Tai, long served under Master Zhuanyu, moving between meditation and doctrinal study, until he finally returned to the Pure Land path. Wishing to carry on the legacy of Master Huiyuan, he resolved to reopen the Lotus Society and asked me to write an introduction. Although my acquaintance with Master Tai is not long, we have performed repentance rituals together in the Great Compassion Hall, and he is a sincere, devoted, and honest man—far from an ordinary or superficial person. During our summer retreat, we discussed the \*Cessation-and-Insight\* teachings, and I found him deeply insightful. He is indeed a true leader of the Lotus Community. I hope that people of all walks of life will be inspired by his example and rise to action. May both ordinary and noble beings uphold firm sincerity, so that the glory of Donglin’s past will not stand alone. If so, in the five hundred years to come, such a Buddha-work will be a hundred thousand times more rare and precious, and its merit will be multiplied a hundred thousandfold beyond that of former days.
