> Preface to the Life Release Society

> Buddhism takes not killing as its foremost precept, and Confucianism regards cherishing life as its greatest virtue. King Cheng Tang of Shang freed animals from nets, and Zichan kept fish in ponds—these actions simply fulfill our innate compassion. If we extend this compassionate mind, benevolence becomes inexhaustible; by drawing analogies and expanding its reach, it transforms into great compassion and loving-kindness. Are the human mind and the Buddha's mind two different minds? If the human mind is no different from the Buddha's mind, then this Saha world is no different from the Pure Land—who can say the defilements of the kalpa cannot be transformed? To realize the Buddha's mind through the human mind and transform the defiled kalpa into a pure land, no method is more effective than releasing living beings. The practice of releasing beings requires only expansion and persistence. A single cup of water cannot extinguish a cartload of burning firewood; but if everyone contributes a cup, and one cup after another keeps coming, when enough cups of water accumulate, the cart fire is bound to be extinguished. Now, the tide of killing is rampant, brought on by shared negative karma. Without the water of compassionate samadhi, who can extinguish it? Without those who understand the heart of Confucius's learning and the essence of Gautama's Dharma, who can put it into practice? The Jisheng Temple Life-Release Society has been revived after being discontinued, and those who continue it are all accomplished Confucian scholars. With sincerity and perseverance, they carry forward the tradition of loyalty and reciprocity. If this society expands and endures, then the great enterprises of ordering the world and transforming the universe are all contained within it. If we do not fail this society, we will not fail the lineage of Confucius or the entrustment of the Buddha on Vulture Peak—and ultimately, we will not fail the innate compassionate mind that is our true nature.
