> Preface to the Diamond Perfection of Wisdom Assembly

> How difficult it is to speak of Prajna! Yet the difficulty does not lie in speaking, but in practice. Since practice is already difficult, speaking of it is no easier. In this world, no one with missing feet and eyes can safely reach the cool pond. But those with strong feet may have weak eyes, while those with keen sight may lack the strength to walk. If the feet are strong, one reaches the destination and then sees; if the eyes are sharp, one sees from afar and knows in advance. How is the path of understanding and practice any different? That is why I cannot help but sigh when I read past commentaries on the Diamond Sutra. The Tathagata's entire teachings revolve around Prajna as their core. Sharp-minded beings could hear Prajna taught for forty-nine years, while dull-minded ones had to pass through the Agamas and Vaipulya scriptures before finally encountering it. As for the Diamond Sutra, it came after the eighth division of the great assembly—a teaching for those of the highest capacity. Its profound and subtle meaning is like a landscape of peaks and slopes, with countless facets: Asanga revealed the theme, Vasubandhu resolved doubts; though they shine like clouds and petals in spring and autumn, each still captures only a fragment of the eternal truth expressed through the seasons and all phenomena. Later practitioners cannot match those two Indian masters in realization, nor can they equal Tiantai Zhiyi in insight. As words multiply, the path grows obscure; as meaning becomes shallow, rhetoric grows tangled. To seek the true essence is to exhaust pen and tongue in vain. How excellent then that Layman Tang Yizhi has made practice the foundation of his commentary! If one can truly practice Prajna, contemplating all dharmas and non-dharmas with every thought as nothing but ultimate reality, then all words become mere chaff—yet they can also transform into wonders. This is the penetrating needle for the heedless monk who hears but does not practice. As for separating the milk from the water, that is the task of the Bodhisattva—the King of Geese. Why should I dare to chatter
