> Someone asked Master Ouyi: “I have heard that none excel the Tiantai Master Zhiyi in explicating the \*Lotus Sutra\*. After his profound enlightenment, Master Zhiyi employed the inconceivable four unobstructed eloquence to expound the \*Profound Meaning\* and \*Words and Phrases\*, which Master Zhang’an recorded in twenty fascicles each, much like Ananda’s compilation of the sutras. Later, Master Jingxi further supplemented them with the \*Explanation of the Subtle Meaning\* and the \*Commentary on Words and Phrases\*, thus illuminating doctrine and contemplation, and earning the title of the ‘Great Revitalizing Ancestor.’ Countless practitioners, relying on these texts, attained the path—so much so that even if a sage were to arise again, they could add nothing. I once saw your preface to the \*Categorization\* and recall you said, ‘Lu Fangweng ceased writing poems on the Yellow Crane Tower because Li Bai put down his brush.’ Now, why do you take up the brush without reason?” Master Ouyi replied: “Alas! This arises from my unavoidable heartfelt urgency. When I was in Wenling and wrote the \*Categorization\*, my intent was to guide all learners worldwide to investigate the three great texts. Over a decade has passed; my tongue is worn and my ears deafened. Yet scarce two or three people truly engage with doctrine and contemplation, instead lamenting the texts’ vastness and seeing them as an ocean without shore. If I don’t slightly condense them, will the perfect and sudden teachings of the \*Explanation\* and \*Marvelous Bliss\* forever remain shelved? The questioner said: “If so, merely abridge the \*Words and Phrases\* and its \*Commentary\*, as you did with the \*Epitome of the Profound Meaning\*. Why alter the structure, change the phrasing, and interject your own views, directly calling it the \*Comprehensive Meaning\*?” Master Ouyi said: “That, too, is unavoidable. In ancient times, commentaries and sutras were separate. When the sutra’s meaning was profound, explanations could be detailed and extensive; when the sutra’s text was clear, they merely outlined its structure. Later people forcibly combined commentaries with sutras, splitting the sutra’s sentences. Now, to elucidate the meaning along with the text without harming the sutra’s vital flow, how could I avoid adjusting the structure? When Master Zhiyi expounded with eloquence, and Master Zhang’an compiled it, while it fully captured the master’s meaning, it wasn’t always the master’s exact words. Thus, the style is simple and ancient, without artifice—appreciated only after prolonged reading. Beginners face the text in confusion. How could I avoid slightly adapting the language? Master Jingxi, refined like gold through a hundred smeltings, possessed profound content and style, yet his writing carried a slight Six Dynasties air, somewhat out of step with contemporary tastes. His revelation of implicit meanings is beyond those who merely count words and ink—does that not also seem like interjecting personal views? The treasury of the \*Lotus Sutra\* is deep, firm, secluded, and far-reaching. Master Zhiyi touched its source—could he fully reveal every detail? Master Zhang’an recorded its outline—could he completely capture every nuance? Even Master Jingxi elucidated its essentials—could he unravel every twisting path? Now, in my folly, I offer a thousand thoughts with one fortunate insight, to resonate with the present age. How could I, fearing the accusation of betraying the ancients, fail to exhaust my meager insight and adopt the framework of ‘appropriating their meaning’? Those who understand me may do so through the \*Comprehensive Meaning\*; those who condemn me may also do so through the \*Comprehensive Meaning\*.”
