### 偶拈問荅自序

> Preface to Casual Questions and Answers

憶癸酉秋，過菰城季清程居士家，遇雪庭禪師。庭謂予曰：「禪者，教之綱領，教之根本也，今教家不信有禪，猶取網而無綱，攀枝附葉而無根本，抑何惑哉？」予應之曰：「師真至言也。夫禪者，教之綱；教者，禪之網也。禪者，教之領；教者，禪之襟裾袖襬也。禪者，教之根本；教者，禪之枝葉花果也。教家捨其綱領根本，固為大惑。今禪士復棄網而獨存一綱，棄襟裾袖襬而獨存一領，棄枝葉花果而獨存一枯樹樁，不尤惑乎？」庭無語。嗟嗟！禪與教如何可分？從上諸祖，未有敢離經一字者，從上諸大教主，未有不透徹心宗，得大機用者。柰何末世視作兩塗，真可哀矣！予每講次，必極力拈提綱領根本以示人，而罕知薦取，又曾作三頌露此消息，而昧者猶謂尚是教意，未是宗意。嗚呼！宗意果離教意，不竟同魔說乎？今更捏餈團作胡餅，以療呱呱之泣，且道畢竟是宗是教？咄，癡人前不得說夢。

> One year in the autumn of Guiyou, I visited Layman Cheng Jiqing at his home in Gucheng and met Master Xueting. Master Xueting said to me, "Chan is the essence and foundation of the teachings. Today, those who study the teachings do not believe in Chan. It's like taking a net without its main rope, or clinging to branches and leaves without any roots. How deluded they are!" I replied, "What you say is truly insightful. Chan is the main rope of the teachings; the teachings are the net of Chan. Chan is the collar of the teachings; the teachings are the sleeves and hem of Chan. Chan is the root of the teachings; the teachings are the branches, leaves, flowers, and fruit of Chan. Those who study the teachings but abandon the essence and foundation are indeed greatly deluded. Yet now, Chan practitioners discard the net and keep only the main rope, discard the sleeves and hem and keep only the collar, or discard the branches, leaves, flowers, and fruit to keep only a withered tree stump. Isn't this even more deluded?" Master Xueting was silent. Alas! How can Chan and the teachings ever be separated? None of the ancient patriarchs dared to stray from a single word of the sutras. None of the great teachers of the teachings ever failed to thoroughly penetrate the mind-essence and attain great function and power. How sad that in these degenerate times, people see them as two separate paths! Whenever I lecture, I vigorously emphasize this essential root and foundation to guide others, yet few truly grasp it. I once composed three verses to reveal this truth, but those who are ignorant still say, "These are just teachings, not the essence of the school." Oh! If the essence of the school were truly separate from the meaning of the teachings, wouldn't it be no different from demonic talk? Now I shape dough into a cake to satisfy the cries of a hungry child. So tell me: is this ultimately the school or the teachings? Hmph! One cannot speak of dreams before a fool.
