> Preface to Zheng Wande on Buddha Recitation

> When I once read the \*Sixteen Contemplation Sutra\*, it says: "The ocean of the Buddhas' perfect and all-pervading wisdom arises from the mind. Therefore, when sentient beings contemplate the Buddha, that very mind is adorned with the thirty-two marks and eighty excellent characteristics. This mind creates the Buddha; this mind \*is\* the Buddha." Ah! This is truly the secret essence of the Buddha-recitation Samadhi. If we only say "mind creates the Buddha" but not "mind \*is\* the Buddha," we imply that Buddhahood is not inherently present—how is this different from expedient teachings? If we only say "mind \*is\* the Buddha" but not "mind creates the Buddha," we imply that Buddhahood requires no cultivation or realization—how is this different from heretical views? Therefore, the \*Shurangama Sutra\* reveals that all phenomena, mundane and supramundane, have their fundamental cause but manifest according to conditions. Knowing the fundamental cause, we understand that the ten realms are all nothing but the mind itself—how could the Buddha realm not be the mind itself? Manifesting according to conditions, we see that the ten realms all arise from the mind—how could the Buddha realm not be created by the mind? In the year \*ji-si\*, I met the old layman Zheng Qianli. Seeing the sacred images he painted—subtle, exquisite, and surpassing heavenly craftsmanship—I suddenly awakened to the principle of "mind creates the Buddha" and "mind is the Buddha." His eldest son, Wande, was especially devoted to meticulous detail. Wande had long been investigating the \*gong'an\* "Who is reciting the Buddha's name?" I said to him: "If you truly believe in these two phrases—'this mind creates the Buddha' and 'this mind is the Buddha'—yet still cling to the word 'who,' it would make people laugh heartily." The \*Mahavaipulya Mahasannipata Sutra\* says: "If a person simply recites Amitabha Buddha, this is called the supreme and profound Chan. When with utmost sincerity they visualize and see the Buddha, this itself is the unconditioned, unarising Dharma." The Dharma Prince Mahasthamaprapta says: "By recollecting and reciting the Buddha, whether in the present or future, you will surely see the Buddha. You are never far from the Buddha, and without relying on other expedient means, you naturally attain the opening of your mind." Master Yongming says: "One moment of true connection is one moment of being a Buddha; one day of true connection is one day of being a Buddha." Master Shouchang says: "The mind that recites the Buddha \*is\* the Buddha." What doubt can there be? What doubt can there be!
