> Postscript to the Commentary on the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra

> Reflecting on my initial resolve to practice the Dharma, I first devoted myself to the Chan school. A few years later, I delved into both Vinaya (monastic discipline) and doctrinal teachings, producing many writings. Among them, this \*Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra\* commentary was one I planned to complete only after finishing reading the entire canon. In the summer of the Ren-Chen year, while retreating at Sheng Creek, I had no access to the canon. So, on the third day of the sixth month, I took up my brush, and by the eleventh day of the eighth month, I set it down. The work was done at the Hall of Cold Fragrance south of Changshui city—just seventy days in total. Yet during those days, Buddhist endeavors and demonic obstacles, illness and external hindrances, seemed to follow me without respite. I moved to three different places before the draft was finally completed. Alas! When I think of my other writings, how smooth and easy they were to produce! But this one commentary on the \*Laṅkāvatāra\*—how challenging and obstructive its path was! Could it be that this Dharma-gate of Self-Realized Noble Wisdom directly challenges the corruptions of these degenerate times, thus stirring the wrath of Māra (the tempter)? Yet though Māra could prevent me from resting a moment, he could neither shake my resolve nor halt my pen. Thus, I vowed to transform even Māra himself into a fellow traveler on the path to Buddhahood. As Vimalakīrti said, "Evil demons and heretics are all my attendants"—how true that is! I am ashamed to have been misled by worldly fame, thus falling short of Bodhidharma's warning: "Understand the path, yet do not practice it." Still, perhaps this is better than those who speak of the path without understanding it. O wise readers! If you can enter the meaning through these words, as a lamp illuminates forms, then my efforts of harming my own benefit for the sake of others will not have been in vain.
