### 西有寱餘自序

> Preface to Xiyou Yiyu

楚石大師示寂，謂夢堂曰：「我去也。」堂曰：「何處去？」曰：「西方去。」堂曰：「西方有佛，東無佛邪？」師震威一喝而逝。予愧無楚師之德，切有楚師之志。然四十九年之非，悔已無及，今年五十，猶寱言不止，不亦可哀邪。莊生云：「且有大覺，而後知此其大夢也。」既未大覺，寧免夢語？《大佛頂經》云「譬如有人，熟寐寱言，是人雖則別無所知，其言已成音韻倫次，令不寐者，咸悟其語。」予殆似之。生平著作，自丙子春前，裒為《淨信堂初集》，戊寅秋前，裒為《絕餘編》，壬午夏前，裒為《閩遊集》，丁亥冬前，裒為《淨信堂續集》，皆寱言也。戊子孟春，寓蕅華塢，凡筆興所至，隨付侍者存之，名曰《西有寱餘》。百世而後，有不寐者，未始不旦暮遇之也。

> Master Chushi, as his time drew near, said to his disciple Mengtang, “I am leaving.” Mengtang asked, “Where are you going?” “To the Western Land,” replied the master. Mengtang then said, “Is there a Buddha in the West, but none in the East?” The master gave a mighty shout and passed away. I am ashamed that I lack Master Chushi’s virtue, yet I sincerely share his aspiration. But the mistakes of these forty-nine years—I regret them beyond repair. Now at fifty, I still cannot stop talking in my sleep—is that not truly lamentable? Zhuangzi said, “Only when one awakens completely can one realize that this life is but a great dream.” Since I have not yet fully awakened, how can I avoid dreamtalk? The \*Shurangama Sutra\* says: “It is like someone talking in his sleep while deeply asleep. Though he himself knows nothing, his words already carry rhythm and order, so that those who are awake can understand what he says.” I am very much like that. Through my life’s writings—before the spring of Bingzi, I gathered them into the \*First Collection of the Pure Trust Hall\*; before the autumn of Wuyin, into the \*Surplus Writings\*; before the summer of Renwu, into the \*Journey to Fujian Collection\*; before the winter of Dinghai, into the \*Second Collection of the Pure Trust Hall\*—all of these are dreamtalk. In the first month of Wuzi, while staying at Ouhua Hut, whatever came to mind through my brush I passed along to my attendant to keep. This is called \*Surplus Dreamtalk from the West\*. A hundred generations from now, there may be someone who is fully awake—and such a one may encounter me at any dawn or dusk.
