> Inscription on Master Duifeng's Blood-Written Receiving of Precepts

> The mind, the Buddha, and sentient beings are fundamentally no different. Because we fail to realize our inherently pure nature, it becomes stained by adventitious defilements, leading to the ups and downs of rebirth in the three realms. Therefore, to escape the cycle of suffering, nothing is more crucial than upholding the precepts; and to purify the foundation of the precepts, nothing surpasses repentance. The scriptures say: "The Prātimokṣa (code of conduct) is our great teacher." It also says: "There are two kinds of courageous people: one who never commits wrongdoings, and one who repents after committing them." Yet, in this degenerate age, not only have pure conduct and virtue been destroyed, but people also hide their faults, as if carrying a mountain on their shoulders or swimming across a vast ocean. Even if they encounter a true spiritual teacher, how can they be saved? Master Duifeng wrote a vow text in his own blood, and after nearly forty years, the handwritings remain as fresh as ever. First transmitted to Master Jiankong Ning, then to Master Zhidu Hong—without their unshakable great vows, this could never have happened. The \*Brahma Net Sutra\* says: "Clear-minded people with sharp wisdom and forbearance are able to uphold this Dharma." How true this is! This text should remain indestructible, just like the nature of the precepts themselves, so that all who see or hear it in the future may awaken to their own inherently pure nature of the precepts, as if personally receiving them from the great Master Zibai.
