> Ten Verses on the White Ox: Author's Postscript

> In studying the Way, one should be neither overly meticulous nor recklessly careless. The Buddhas teach using both partial and complete metaphors. The "Ox-herding" meditation case can serve as a metaphor both for the immediate conditions of the ancestral tradition and for the gradual cultivation and realization over countless eons of the Buddha Way. Moreover, a person of perfect awakening transcends distinctions, yet the six identities always remain intrinsic—why should the principle of perfect harmony obstruct practical stages? Would one then necessarily cling to arrogant complacency within the ultimate truth, claiming that only this is the path that does not fall into graduated stages? There are those who criticize this verse for assigning each stage a specific position, claiming it lacks the true nature of a Chan monk. I tell them, "I'm delighted that you, my elder brother, have understood Patriarchal Chan, but you haven't even dreamt of the Tathāgata's Chan."
